The disease resistance of Tantau & Kordes roses
Comments (40)I am glad to see this thread updated. I think cupshaped--I do wish she and Jim from West NY were still posting here--made a very good point about fungi developing resistance to fungicides, In view of the recent news about "superbugs" and "superweeds" having evolved resistance to herbicides and Bt engineered corn, I think her point is one we American gardeners ought to be taking seriously. I am growing and trying to preserve some of the older Tantau floribundas. They do BS, but leaves grow back quickly when I cut off the spotted ones, and do seem to be hardy with protection. The colors are like nothing else I have seen among roses. Paul Zimmerman has said in writings and videos that roses will often develop some resistance, as individual plants, to the diseases that might be present in one's own area....See MoreWanted : Jade Rose (Tantau 2000)
Comments (1)I have had success make roots off of florist roses and not any from a flower store that were real fresh but they always end up dying..I use schlutz rooting hormone, like a inch in the bottom of a 6-8 inch cup and fill with water and wait till they root(or die).I had 99 cuttings from random places and only 2 have rooted one flowered a sweet pink flower and the other should bloom in the next 2 or 3 days...See MoreTantau and Fil Roses
Comments (16)There are more issues with roses from offshore than just viruses. Rose Rosette disease came from Asia as did Japanese beetles. A couple of years ago the restrictions became even more difficult because of a beetle larva that can live in rose stems. Now the budwood I can import has to be less than the thickness of a pencil so that the beetle larva does not come with the roses. This beetle probably is not a threat to roses but it has the potential to destroy American forests. There is also another very serious disease attacking roses in Europe and the clearance for roses from northern Europe is even more difficult. I have has USDA quarantine sites for more than 20 years and I think that the caution that of USDA is well founded. Yes it can be frustrating, but the idea that someone would do illegal importation of roses just to have a rose not available in the N. America is reckless and a bit selfish. I do not know why Tantau does not have an agent in N. America. I have long been friends with them, but since I work with the competition it is not something we discuss. Perhaps Palatine was not prepared to do the US patent and Canadian PBR that would be necessary to protect Tantau's varieties and this is why they are not able to offer these roses more than the size of the company. It is difficult and expensive work to protect the roses. Without protection Tantau is unlikely to have any financial gain from offering roses in N. America. J&P was Tantau's agent at the time Fragrant Cloud was introduced and they patented the rose. It is now off patent....See MoreJessica/Jessika Tantau rose
Comments (14)LOL that's one of MY pictures! Several yrs ago they asked me if they could use some of my pics for their roses... so I sent them that one. Whether they actually have the "real" JESSIKA or not, I do not know. Hopefully Sara-Ann's boo-boo rose is just that. I still think she should contact them and get a replacement. If it ends up being that same bright pink rose, then they need to stop listing the rose on their website. In fact, I need to inform them that my second MONET rose was the wrong one AGAIN. Then they can change their description and put up a pic of the lavender one....See MoreRelated Professionals
