Ethan Allen Furniture protection.

I need help with a little situation. I have quite a few pieces of furniture from Ethan Allen. I know their finish can easily stain or scratch and I try to protect it as well as I can. I recently purchased two Gracie tables and I would like to put glass top on them to protect them from all kind of object on and off as they will be in the family room. My question is : Do I need to put felt pads under the glass? Will silicon or plastic bumper pads destroy the finish of the furniture where they are placed? If I use felt pads (nonadhesive) they will let the glass top slide. Should I place the glass top dirrectly on the wood? I dont really know how to go about this . How would you all approach this? Does any of you have Ethan Allen tables with glass tops? How did you all place the glass on? On felt pads, on plastic or silicone pads or directly on the wood surface?

If you use glass, you must get tempered glass which is more expensive than conventional glass. I would expect to pay between $ 200 and $300 per piece. Because the table top is not perfectly level and to keep the glass from sliding around you will want to use some thin "dots". These should not leave any marks over time, but one never says never. This is what my suppliers of fine furniture use when we have glass tops from the factory.

Such beautiful wood I wouldn’t put anything on them. Unless you are renting the house out or mostly children are going to use the room , it shouldn’t be necessary.

Thank you! I dont really want to put anything on them but yes, they will be used in our family room and are exposed to more wear than my other Ethan Allen furniture. I need to protect them somehow that is why I was going to put glass on. We always have bottles of water, or glasses of wine and although we can use coasters our current tables went through quite a lot of use and mishaps.

I have an Ethan Allen sofa, bookcases and coffee table bought maybe 3 years ago. Happy with all. Inside of the coffee table drawers says "Made in USA." I believe some parts of the sofa were made in USA and some were not. I could check the label if you really want to know. I also bought some American-made furniture recently from Stickley (made in NY) and Lee Industries (made in North Carolina). The Room and Board catalog tells you where their sofas are made in the US.

We recently spent almost $30K in Ethan Allen, Pasadena on a dining set and two sofas for our new condo. To make a long story short, the dining tabletop had significant flaws, blemishes, chipped corners and holes filled with putty. Don’t fool yourself with in-store samples. Once they have your money, you are stuck with what you get and no one takes responsibility for what has been delivered to your home. The accent pillows that came with the sofas did not match our selected material and did not include the surrounding fringes. Tiffany, the sales lady evidently had not placed the correct order according to our selected material. Despite sending pictures of our selected material to Greg the manager as well as Tiffany, both of them still refuse to take any responsibility and accept their mistake. After spending some $30 K in this store, they refuse to even replace $200 worth of pillows due to their own mistake. When you are in Ethan Allen, you think you’re dealing with a reputable company until the furniture is delivered. If you’re in the market for anything with after-purchase services and warranty, you’ll be better off avoiding Ethan Allen. Their sales tactics are just like entering car dealerships. Never again will I or anyone in my extended family shop at Ethan Allen. Don’t give them any of your hard-earned money. Horrible service, no accountability and their prices are very expensive. They deserve numerous negative stars, if any star at all.

I also have Ethan Allen antique pine furniture from the 70s and was trying to find a similar stain. I also thought Jacobean might be close, but also that it needed some red stain in it. I see your post is from 2005. What did you use?

I have an Ethan Allen dining table with 10 chairs, a buffet, sofa and oversized chair. Have had for about 10 years. I would not recommend EA furniture. The dining chairs have fared the worst even though we only use them for special occasions. The cording has come off several chairs and the seat cushion on one is completely gone. The buffet (which they still sell) has chipped paint in many places and the closing mechanism doesn't work so one door is slightly more open than the other. Re the sofa and chair, the down filling is not full enough to keep the cushions looking "puffed". It always looks messy. Super disappointed across the board. I assumed the dining room set would last a lifetime and be handed down. Not the case.

Ethan Allen designer here! I would be hesitant to add glass tops, but you certainly don't want to place the glass directly on the wood. The little "dots" are a possibility, but there's no way to know how they would affect the finish long term depending on what they are made from and the humidity in the room, etc.

Personally, I would just make sure to use proper coasters for drinks/avoid placing hot items and follow any other care instructions on the Ethan Allen website for the wood finishes. And if you purchased them recently, ask you designer about the accidental protection plan. This is specifc to cover incidents that are unexpected (like damage from children) and covers repairs for 5 years. It's probably less of a cost than buying custom glass covers, and you will be able to relax and enjoy your beautiful tables :)

Your tables are beautiful.

I have two gorgeous Ethan Allen dining tables (> 5 years old) and understand where you are coming from. As much as I love to leave the tabletops bare, it’s hard to ”live” with them bare as they won’t hold up to crafts, sweaty glasses or even daily dining. So I find myself with glass on one and the other covered with table pads or a table cloth most of the time.

Yes .. you are absolutely right.. they would be stained or damaged the first day of real use. I don’t really want the glass but we have to have it.. our family room is where life happens. Living room and dining rooms are barely used only on special occasions and when guests come which when that happens coasters are enough. Family room is a different story.. is every day life..
