"Ralph Lauren" and brand bastardization

I am looking for a water repellant, insulated knee length coat for my upcoming trip. First choice would be tan/khaki color, and I like something fitted or belted. Ideally it has to work in everything from 35F to 70F (well then I'd just not wear it in all likelihood).

I own two really nice long winter coats, a few nice ski jackets, and three raincoats, in black, olive and off white. None of them really fit the bill.

So I went looking for a classic khaki trench with a zip out lining.

I came across this on the RL website. Left to right, they are $189, $798 and $2690. On the same day and same site, side by side.

Now we all know that RL has a ton of subbrands, some pretty awful (Chaps, I'm looking at you) but this is absurd. It undermines trust and the very meaning of the brand --- the first one has to be pretty junky IMHO. And I 'd never pay the cost of the third one when, essentially, RL sells its own knock off.

As it turns out I am going a different direction, as I have decided that none of the trenches I looked at are warm enough.

I'm singing the praises for this coat:

It's waterproof, has a removable liner and is snazzy-looking to boot. I bought it for my trip down the Danube in late October but only wore it once or twice as the temps were warmer than expected. Bonus--it is so warm! I wore it to work this winter on the coldest winter nights instead of a long down coat. At least four of my co-workers now have this coat.

THANK YOU to everyone who commented on how to get HD to look up and convert the old RL paint formulas into their current stock of PPG or Glidden. You saved me tears, time, and stress in finding another company's match to the timeless, and in my opinion, best paint color palette there ever was (Ralph Lauren). So so sad to see them go, but how fortunate that HD still has all their color formulas!! Today was a huge win for my home remodel! Thank you!

Well, I feel your paint (ha! I meant pain, but how fitting!). I also looked at the Lowe's Olive line, which you can see pics of in the green thread. I went so far as to photoshop the Lincolnshire Olive into my kitchen, with rubber stampings of my curtains (haven't made them yet, fabric looking at me accusingly). It is a weird color, because it didn't look green in my ps version, and yet it worked. I don't know how to post pics here...I've tried so many diff ways. I need to figure that out, because words don't cut it in this arena! I can email you the ps version of my kitchen, but realize I am a strictly amateur ps-er! it looks rather like a child's drawing, I'm afraid. The toile isn't the typical toile, it's floral of all things, but I love it. Sort of scrolly pattern. I fell in love and had to have it:-) I'm going to use an olive green grosgrain ribbon to tie it to the rod and maybe edge it in an olive fabric...we'll see how lazy I get.

A while ago someone linked this site which does equivalent from brand to brand. ( It rates them as to the qualiry of the match...) So it seems for SW, the best match is SOFTER TAN and they consider it an excellent match. Have a look- and see what else you can find. (its a great site!!) I always found him incredibly boring, and I very much disliked his "preppy" style - especially the shirts with the stupid polo ponies on them. I lived in San Francisco when these were popular - among the bourgeois crowd, with whom I had little in common. Anyway, just not my then, then or now. Recently, we had a production manager at work who had just come from Ralph Lauren furniture, and I did not get along with this PM at all. He was very bossy and asked me if I wanted him to be my supervisor instead of the boss I already had, who was the owner of the company. He wanted to be able to tell me what to do, but when he did, I told him that he would have to get approval from his boss, who was also my boss. Needless to say, we clashed a lot. He also considered himself to be a designer, but instead of coming up with original designs, he copied designs from Jean-Michel Frank, which I proved to my boss. I'm sure this did not endear me to him, but there was nothing he could do about it. My original designs did get produced instead of his counterfeits.

Just went to look, and it shows that Kohl's has it for $74.50 shipped. If anyone is interested. I keep entertaining it. but no khaki.

@jojoco I see 2 different coats on the Eddie Bauer site. The one you show and one called 'Girl on the Go Insulated Waterproof Trench Coat'. The word Insulated added. Same price. Looks the same. Just making sure yours is not the insulated one?

I need something like this for a cruise to Alaska in August.

Oddly, the colors listed under Clearance are more expensive than the ones not on clearance.

Mine is insulated but the liner is buttoned in.it slso has a detachable hood

Jojoco, how long is your EB coat on you? I was going to try to order one of these in a tall size bc they look a little on the short side. Maybe the models are all tall? Are you about 5’6” or 5’7”? Where does the hem hit on you, if you don’t mind my asking?

Meanwhil,e I ordered Jojo's in olive, this Bogner one (sans the yellow pants)

And this one : (watch the video, this is the Swiss Army Knife of jackets)... is has a removable vest/liner/hood. I like how fitted it is.

kswl, the regular length is perfect on me. I'm about 5'6 (or a smidge less) and the coat skims a little over my knees. Maybe 1/2 inch.

Often Eddie Bauer has 2 versions on the coat -one with a button out liner and one without. Recommend the one with the liner, you can always use without.

The one I ordered, for $195 in olive, has a button-in liner. Oddly the black is like $80 less.

Yeah, the ones marked clearance are more expensive than the ones not marked clearance. It's so odd. I just ordered the black. Thank you @jojoco!

Not only does Ralph have brand presence across most price points, they also make clothes that go directly to outlets as if it was of a quality to be sold at a department store or Polo store but was remaindered. I said something about understanding why some of these things didn't sell at full price in stores (back when I actually bought clothes of that sort) and someone I know in retail said "Oh this was Never in stores, this is Made to be put in a pile at some outlet making someone think they are getting a deal."

Yes, well, I do know that, at least at one point, there was more square footage of retail "outlet" space in the US than there is of "standard" retail space. So clearly not remainders as it once was long ago!
