Design Dilemma Building a Home

Stone or no stone?

My wife and I are contemplating a stone to complement the brick we have chosen for our new build. We can’t find a way to build a 3D rendering, but wanted to see if anyone has used a combination of Wiarton stone and Alpine White Brick from General Shale? I have attached some photos and where the stone would be placed. Thanks for any help you can provide!

One material for the whole house. Just brick. Or just stone. You are trying for a traditional house and almost achieving it until you start slathering on too many materials. Absolutely skip the band up to windowsill height. That is fun on mcm ranches but silly on traditional homes.

That is just the perfect comment, laag! That contractor is a master (of something)--there was TRUTHINESS in what he said, but not good advice, I think. Now, I (in zone 7) did set pavers directly into a layer of gravel that was already present on top of compacted clay soil, and interestingly, it was for all the reasons above, and I am very happy with it--but I would not have hired someone to install an original patio that way and especially not a bluestone patio. (I wanted a TEMPORARY patio for about $100 in a pre-existing gravel mess that is gradually being converted to non-gravel and may not in the future be a patio).

Visit a stone specialty retailer to get some ideas. You will find stone in every size, shape, and color, and possibly a display area of sample landscape uses. The link below is an example located near me. I would think you could find something to either blend with or accent your home. I call this type of stone river rollers, river jacks, or river stone. Normally you find them in mixed colors. Perhaps you can call some quarries and ask. It may be a good idea to know if water will ever flow in that creek bed at some point. If so, will the rocks be heavy enough to withstand the water without being dislodged ? My house is not finished yet. Possibly by next week. We plan to start moving some things in this weekend if the locks are on the doors. The edge pieces of the granite bumped up the cost. I think the mason said the corners were $11.00 each. He searched for the largest ones he could find. The other option was to have the mason cut the stone for corners. Then you add the labor cost so it would probably equal. The basic stone price was close to the Owens Corning price. I believe the price for the chimney and interior wall for wood stove came to $7,000. including labor which was a bit higher than our contractor expected. This was the first time the mason had used this product and he was very pleased with the results. He is working with a contractor who builds log homes and he stated he would offer this product. We are all happy with this project.

Make exterior material and color selections considering all sides of a house, NOT just the front elevation. Strive for continuity. It is sculpture not a painting.

Very nice stone, but please skip it. One material on this home.

It seems like there are way too many features on this house. Skip the brick eyelashes above the windows and the brick outline on the window to the left of the front door.

I'm also seeing too many add-ons that don't relate to meaningful interior spaces. I feel these to be superficial and will fade as McMansion design, its predecessor has. Undersized land space has been the underlying cause. If that's your situation I feel the pain.

Skip the kids Barney stickers plastered everywhere. Reduce that down to the major bones, without all the gable and material distractions. Now, you've got a strong statement, not hidden or disguised by false eyelashes and weaves.

No Stone. Too many alleged "design elements" as well, mixing and matching styles is not always effective.. How far along are you in this process?

I never like brick and stone together and you have a busy front facing with all the grids in the windows , the fancy trim above the windows the white brick on the arch and the shutters which look too small. I think too much is always too much. To me this house has not decied what style it is and I like homes best with 3 finishes max Too many things and the big one is what style are you wanting . Looks like atiny lot with all house .

Very rarely do brick and stone look good together.

Stone and stucco is a good pairing.
