small bathroom vanity??

Hi,

I have a small guest bathroom and the space for the vanity can be no more than 16.5 inches deep. It can be up to 36 inches in length. what do you recommend?

Patricia's recommendation would fit - but it won't provide any closed storage if you need some (you've specified that it's for a guest bathroom - but not if it's a powder room vs. a full functioning bathroom). I think that it was a 24" wide sink.

You could use IKEA Sektion kitchen cabinets to make a vanity base that would fit your specifications. You would need to use the wall cabinets - they are 15.5" with door/drawer fronts - so, you could overhang your countertop slab by 1" and still be at the right depth. You could put different pieces together in order to have the longer 36" width.

People have also modified other IKEA cabinets in order to have the right depth (for example, many people have used IKEA Sektion base cabinets to make a vanity - and cut the depth down to 21" or less). IKEA has some narrow vanities - they might not be 16.5" - but I assume that the depth could be modified the same way that the Sektion base cabinets and Pax wardrobe cabinets can be).

I've seen quite a few IKEA bathrooms here on Houzz that you'd never know were made with IKEA components.

It seems like when you search for a 16.5" or less depth vanity, they seem to be a narrow width also. However, I haven't done a full search.

From what I have learned recently from designing two new bathrooms is that mirror size is a matter of personal taste and may really depend on the layout the sink, faucet, and lighting. 1. For starters, you want a mirror positioned and sized to meet your grooming needs. I am facing this decision right now. For one of my bathrooms, I know that I need a mirror the width of the vanity to hide the slightly off centered position of my two single handle wall mounted faucets that are both plumbed with the joystick controls on the right side of the spouts. 2.Another question to ponder is how much time does one want to spend cleaning the mirrors. If they are too close to the vanity top, then one will spend more time cleaning water spots. 3. In my opinion, larger mirrors will make a small space seem. 4. Do you want to mount wall lights/sconces on the mirror so that you can maximize the mirror size? 5. If a vanity has two sinks, do you want one large mirror or two mirrors? 6. I would discourage you from a 20x20. IMO, they're painfully square. Although you'll gain additional space from the size I think your better off with a longer rectangle than a larger square. Another very good size for yours would be 16x24. Most improvement contractors will charge you by the sq/ft. I look at both sq/ft and material consumption. On a jump from 20 to 22 long even though the square footage jumped to 396 from 360 you'll use the same piece count on decking, maybe a bundle and a half more shingles, and about a half yard more of redimix for the floor. I'll see if I can find you some pic's of the look I like, maybe your man will have some similar inventory. I like a completely cathedraled ceiling with exposed rafters and exterior siding flipped over for the roof decking, it looks great and cuts incurred construction costs by not having soffit. When I mosaiced my bathroom counter, everything was off in order to repair the wood structure underneath. You can do it either way - mosaic around the existing works, or take off the fixtures and put them on later, leaving space around. Remember, though, you'll need extenders to your plumbing, cuz the counter w/be higher. I found that out in the 80s, when my DH and I tiled our kitchen counters. It was Sunday evening and we couldn't turn the water on until he had the pipe extensions. A trip to the hardward store, and several hrs. later........... If I were doing your project, I'd just mosaic around the fixtures. Mosaicing isn't hard. Since it's your first project, my only advice is to be sure you put enough tesserae into your work so you w/have lots of interest, and not much grout. Seems to be a common thing for first time projects. Remember we like pictures of WIPs.

I'd decide what finish I want first, stained or painted, and style of the cabinet (raised panels, Shaker, flat)-and go from there. Since my preferences are usually medium dark but not too dark wood stains, and mid range (not too dark not too light) paint colors for big furniture elements like cabinets-I would end up with not too dark and not too light anyway)) Then I'd pick a countertop that would complement the vanity and the overall look of it to another big element like floor etc. It is a matter of preference and overall mood you want in the space. I see by your floor(a mock up..if it is what you plan to do) you appreciate some contrast, over the completely tone on tone space. What I wouldn't do-I wouldn't do full dark on dark in a (relatively) small room, I'd try to keep one or two of the elements lighter, as was suggested already in previous comments. If your floor will be light as in the picture-I'd also keep the countertop lighter if I decide on a darker vanity. (I could do darker walls though..)) Mirror, the reflective surfaces of fixtures and faucets, and sconces-they will all help to get a general feel of enough light..

Do you mean full guest bathroom or PR 2 very different needs I did have that as a PR so the need for much in the way of storage was not an issue that was also along time ago and now many chouces for this type of sink.
