HVAC company wrong doing? What do i need to do?
Comments (7)You are not the first to post these type of problems. I am sorry this has happened to you. It is ridiculous to add 5 pounds of R22 to a system and then state the repair cannot be guaranteed. They should have informed you of the problem and given you a choice. In my opinion you owe them the $65 for the service call. The debate is who is going to pay for the 5 pounds of R22 that escaped as soon as it was installed. You could fight this in small claims court and try for a win, or you can cut your losses and settle now. Write them a letter explaining your position as to why you should not pay the full amount of the bill. Make your offer in the letter. The 5 pounds of R22 at $45 per pound would have been $225. You could compromise and offer half the amount on the refrigerant. You need to decided how much your time you want to waste dealing with a company you will never use in the future. Good luck with your new HVAC system. I hope the installation contractor is honest and competent....See MoreComplete HVAC Replacement Project
Comments (9)CigarLover first about previous post on heat pumps. As I've said many times, heat pumps are not for everyone or every application. Generally for California, heat pumps are not used except in all electric situations where nat gas service is not available. Main reason is California's ridiculous electric rates. Plus this will be a new system for a homeowner that appears to be a senior citizen most likely use to nat gas heat. Now to the original post and the system quoted. These are my observations and I will say from the start that I like AmStd systems. I do recommend a load calculation for both heating and cooling. For a mild climate, it is difficult for me to understand why you would need an 80K 80% eff furnace even a two stg VS model. Plus it appears you want to go up in size on AC condenser from a 2 1/2 ton to a 3 ton mdl. Why? I would ask dealer for the Matching AHRI Directory matching number. I did not see it although I may have overlooked it. For me a matching number is important. You are aware that the furnace quoted is a communicating mdl? I suggest you go to AmStd website and read the features on this furnace if you haven't already. I am not a fan of electronic air cleaners because of the regular maintenance required. I prefer a good 4-5" pleated media cabinet that has to be changed out once a year like the HW 200 model. Zero maintenance/cleaning. You need a good understanding of what routine maintenance is expected on the EAC. Any hot/cold spots in home? Has ductwork been thoroughly inspected? Does home have adequate return? If you only have one return, I would add another for upstairs living area. Flushing refrigerant line is an acceptable practice. However, line set must be correct size for new condenser. This is important! And. I regret to tell you many dealers are not as candid and truthful about this issue as they should be. IMO Here is a link that might be useful: Platinum SV Furnace...See MoreReplacing HVAC - Advice please
Comments (27)Tigerdunes - yes all my systems are getting a work out this week. We lost power for 4+ hours on Monday and all 4 HVAC units were working hard to get the house back to comfortable. The gas units (including the new bedroom one) warmed things up pretty quickly - all in second stage. My basement unit (heat pump and electric strips) was a real problem. The condenser froze up with the rain/sleet and the defrost cycle wouldn't clear it. We ran until today on the strips only (can't wait to see the electric bill) before I could chip all the ice off the condenser and get it running properly again. Forecast is for low teens the next day or two - so they will all be working hard for the next couple of days. Glad I signed up for a low 12 month fixed gas rate. To the other poster - not sure why the comments on zoning - my house is zoned by having different units (one for each floor and a separate one for the master bedroom), not a mechanical zoning system....See MoreHVAC Dilemma! i want some help in regards to my HVAC system . thank y
Comments (11)Sizing can be less of an issue when you have multiple units. Because each unit is controlled independently, provided of course the unit itself is not over sized for the area in which it serves resulting in excessive short cycling. In your case 3 ton plus 2 ton isn't necessarily equal to 5 tons of cooling... unless you drive those thermostats really low. By having two systems with total capacity of 5 tons (which, most of the time this would be oversized for a 1700 - 1800 sq ft structure) has a few advantages. 1. You have the ability to use one system only during low heat days or set the opposing unit higher. The unit set higher only runs if load conditions warrant.... meaning if it's not hot, the thermostat controlling the unit does not call... the unit can not run without a call... 2. Utility bills can be much less... because you rarely use both systems at the same time. You run the bedroom system when you sleep, the other when you're awake. If you have a home office in one the bedrooms you may need to rethink things a bit. 3. Extra capacity for when it's hot out. When it's hot you have the capacity to cool the home. (even while entertaining guests --- additional people add heat) Remember heat waves come, heat waves go... a so call 'properly sized' AC system is essentially properly sized roughly 10% of the time... especially if that system is a single speed AC system. Alot of people I come across like to sleep cool. So for that reason I doubt I would change the configuration of the space. Once you realize what you have, the choices you make are mostly budget type concerns. Essentially a set up like this runs like a 2 stage system. This kind of subject is above the pay grade of many... choose your contractor wisely. I service the Katy, Texas area....See MoreRelated Professionals
