Replace HVAC As Is or Do Radical Change?

last month

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to weigh our options for replacements.

We had an incompetent contractor when we built north of Chicago in 2001. He admitted he cut corners by hiring a novice HVAC person, then he attempted to remediate the resulting cold rooms by installing a small boiler and hot water piping under three north rooms.

This was a teardown. We have a 1600 sq ft unfinished basement and bordering 4' deep crawls under 2900 sq ft single floor living. Ceilings are 9' plus three 16' cathedrals. A LOT of windows, but very tightly sealed. There is a full-height attic and attached garage. 3.1 baths.

There two 2-stage gas-fired forced air systems -- divided east and west. Two flow-through humidifiers; two Aprilaire air cleaners. Floor delivery; summer and winter air returns.

I like the 2-stage furnaces and the humidity. The under-floor heating is great where it exists. The A/C has been fine.

Not fine is the MBA, with no radiant heat -- only electric cabling under the tile. Not fine is one 14 X 18 BR on the south, with cathededral ceiling; two supplies; one pair of returns. (Our similar-size MBR has three supplies and two pair of returns -- and no cathedral.)

Would we 'start over' to make the forced air adequate throughout the house? (Require new ducting?)

Would we replace same/same on the furnaces and A/C and buy new boiler, extending the radiant heat under the cold MBA? (Wouldn't help the cold south BR.)

Aside: We have two 50-gal tank water heaters that are over 10 years old.
