and now... I found a site listing the record Big Trees of New York State. Well, P. edulis and other mid western pines are listed as found in Ontario County, New York. The only thing I could say is... maybe this is due to the higher (compared to NJ) elevations - making the region colder, but maybe dryer in winter. Well, here she is, looking a bit worse for wear after that wind storm we had yesterday. Also, as you can see from my deer fence that is only semi-effective(see that spruce behind it? Yeah, it's being cut down...was chomped on one too many times), it gets chomped on at times. And it is young and could benefit from some pruning up top, it is kind of congested. And I have NO IDEA what is up with that one droopy branch. It is like it has one weeping branch; it has always been like that. Weird. HOWEVER, I still love it.:P For a maple, it has good multi-season interest, and seems to be tough as nails. Thanks for the picture help, BTW. I'm sure Ginny(was it Ginny who said this?) was right about this tree reseeding all over, but I mow all around it, so I never see or notice the seedlings. It has never suckered so far though.

I know the Garden in the Woods in Natick specializes in Native New England plants. They are in some way connected with the Nasami Farm Nursery in Western Massachusetts, and if you call them in advance they can order all sorts of Native plants. I know the soil conservation offices in many counties have annual sales in Spring where they offer a few kinds of plants at deep discounts. Moose Hill has an annual native plant sale in the Spring. I think I know someone socially who works for a company that does organic edible landscaping or something weird like that. I think arborvitae actually are native to this area. (Although they seem boring to me to. If you came from Key West you may be a bit disappointed. In that tropical environment, you have a much broader range of options. i go with norfolk ... not sure its really a pine ... so go with the latin name ... its a houseplant for most of us.. and i recommend that forum if you are going to keep it potted ... i am not sure its a full sun plant in a pot .... and that is why it does ok indoors .... i am sure it can do great things in its native habitat.. but that would not include a pot ... you dont mention where you are.. it might not favor winter outdoors ... they are extremely cheap at bigboxstore... i dont recommend spending a lot of money to try to save this rather common plant ... it most likely needs to be repotted.. and so i include PROPER MEDIA in the cost .. ken
