Nancy, Gee, never heard of that but you never know. It may apply to some extent. We'll see if this year's seeds do something. I just sowed a flat of 2 liter pop bottles and 4 of them were the yarrows. Saved a few seeds for a later sowing in the spring just in case. PV & Ellen, I did something last year that I will be repeating simply because I liked it and it filled some of my containers on the deck. I took some perennial sprouts, planted them in 4 inch pots, then planted the pots in some of those long rectangular planters. Not sure why but those Echinaceas and Buddleias took right off and by the time I removed them to plant in the holding beds in the fall, their roots had gone right into the soil of the huge planters. I was amazed at their growth! Never fed them anything. I'm wondering if the double potting had anything to do with it. I got the rectangular planters on G Day and hope there are many more out there this year. :O) The foliage of Yarrow would look nice in one of those.

L in FL After finishing the sauces, I tried them and the family did too. Surprisingly the favorite one was the yellow that has an almost fruity flavor, the black one has a deep, rich flavor almost smoky and the red one was the least liked even tho it was still packed with fresh tomato flavor. To give you a better advice on the varieties, I would have to know what do you and your family like, big varieties, medium, small, hybrids, heirlooms or a combination. In my house we like a lot of varieties and I always grow a big assortment, small, medium, big. I grow mostly heirlooms, few hybrids. Each season I tried to grow some of the same varieties and some different or new ones. For a cherry the ones that come to mind would be Sungold and Yellow Submarine. For a medium, Jaune Flame, Chang Li For a big variety, Kellogs Breakfast, Pork Chop. The coming season I am growing some new yellow varieties... A past harvest Silvia

I honestly went through the same struggle with myself for the past 3.5 years. I moved into our "new" (but old) house, and immediately began dreaming of all of the things I needed to save up for. Sandstone countertops were #1 on my list. Then I lived in the space. I had 2 babies. I repeatedly kneaded dough, spilled oil, dribbled red wine, set hot-off-the-stove pots, (etc.) on my 1980's Formica countertop. Nothing ever happened! I didn't have to call the handyman when any of this happened the way I did previously with my granite countertops. In the end, I decided that I'm not willing to put a large portion of my budget into the countertops that I originally thought I wanted. This will likely not be the popular choice, but I decided on the new-ish Formica 180fx in Bianca Luna. When people in my real life inquire about what I've decided on for countertops, they literally **cringe** when I tell them Formica. I'm not sure why--it's a great product, extremely functional, and it has changed and improved a lot since the circa 1980's Formica. As such, if I live with it for 5 years and then decide that I love everything about my renovated kitchen besides the Formica, I've only spent $500 on it (rather than more than triple that amount), and I will upgrade further at that point. So, I'm not suggesting that Formica 180fx is the solution for you, but you may want to take a look at it!
