Gap between soffit / bulkhead and cabinet
Comments (5)"fixed cabinets"-do you mean you are considering "stock sizes". No cabinet is "fixed", there are infinite ways to assemble/build/modify cabinets. With the money you are saving not removing soffit,go ahead and get the carcass sizes and minimal under soffit molding to get you the backsplash dimension and where applicable the tall pantry cabinet of exact size you want. Barker cabinets or scherrs cabinets or any local cabinet maker will construct your sizes so you are flush/have clearances for doors/the cabinets line together and no "leftover gaps" have to dealt with later. Not to say you never need a filler strip.....but work on your dimensions and go to someone who can get you your requisite sizes....See Moresize of exposed beams
Comments (1)I would say if you want it to be obvious for decor's sake, go with the joists on top of the beam. I think 6" hanging below wouldn't be obvious enough and it would just seem like a construction item. Comments (9)I assume you've tried frosted bulbs already, right? Pendants for task lighting are always tricky. Your lights look really good in there when they are off but I think you need to replace them with something more like what Nancy used. An opaque shade--even thick frosted glass--is what you need. If you feel crafty, try putting frosted window film over the sides of the shades. Swap to LED lights in case it doesn't respond well to heat. Once you can't see through the shades, these disguised or new ones, you can use any ugly-but-practical bulb you like, like spotlight style bulbs. Once I swagged an old Tiffany-style stained glass shade over a cooktop. I bet that's not the look you want. But I needed light. :)...See MoreRelated Professionals
