Need advice- ugly house lacks curb appeal
Comments (10)I don't think the windows need shutters. IMHO, it's a very cute house and the cinder-brick screen is a lovely feature to highlight. Start by cleaning the bricks and the exterior. If you avoid painting those it will be a lower-maintenance exterior. Do paint the garage door a color that helps it disappear. If you want to paint the cinder bricks, choose something that highlights them. I like YVs design, it's very low-maintenance....See MoreHelp! Ugly front porch- need help with curb appeal!
Comments (7)Chiflipper is right. Repairs first, then cosmetics. Easy and inexpensive to fix the railing(s). As for the stairs, I would go in this direction for cosmetic changes or really gray treads and white risers....See MoreNeed help with curb appeal for my new home
Comments (14)Not sure how much you want to spend on this but if you are re teracing the yard and stairs, consider curving or angling them toward the driveway. it would add convenience and visual interest. I would cover the cinderblock wall with a stone veneer or a faux stone paint job and let vines grow all down it. You could even add cast stone tracery and grow ivy over the wall to fake castle walls or paint a mural :-) For safety I would keep the lampoles (sprayed hammer black metal ) or replace with lights on the stair walls to illuminate the steps. I would also spray the stair rail black and maybe add black shutters a classic red brick, white trim and black shutters. Then a couple black urns with bright flowers could flank entry steps. (Those Rustoleum textured metal spray paints work magic on cheap plastic pots as well as metal light fixtures) If you want a awning or a small gable over the front door add post to stair rails to support a metal roof. You have a nice house with intersting design challenges just clean and add some colorful plants while you plan any big structural changes to the wall....See MoreHow to add curb appeal to this boring, ugly, side entry lake home.
Comments (20)If the windows with the view are a bedroom and bathroom, does that bathroom have another exterior wall in which you might add a window so any escaping sounds and smells from the bathroom do not open onto the deck? Have you considered sliding glass doors in the bedroom and/or (if the floor plan enables it) changing around the purposes of the rooms so the bedroom by the deck becomes a more used room .... such as could a dining room become a bedroom and the bedroom become a dining room? and/or build another bedroom and bath upstairs above the bedroom and bath on the main floor so the deck side bedroom might become a bonus room/den? Adding a downstairs entry facing the "front" (photographer) could be a good idea, depending upon the layout of the home. However, if the current main entry is beneath the deck, you might consider turning the garage into a sun room or screened porch that wraps around to become the entry unless you actually need/want another opening facing "front" (photographer). Do at least first consider what that would do to the interior of the room in which you're adding the entry. Does the room lend itself to that change? What side of the house is north/south/east/west -- will that impact your decision?...See MoreRelated Professionals
