Shaker Cabinet Style
Comments (45)I paid an up charge to have the 2.25" rails/stiles for the shaker door style I picked. The shaker door style I have has solid wood rails/stiles with plywood middle panel, it comes standard with 2.75" rails/stiles, the all solid wood version comes standard with thinner rails/stiles. It was still cheaper for me to pay the up charge for the plywood middle panel as that's the only different between two versions. The KD did told me ahead of time that the top drawers will have even thinner rails since I picked out the 5 pcs construction and I was ok with that. For the other drawer that can accommodate 2.25" rails have 2.25 rails. Only the top drawer has a reduced rails. I have attached a picture of my coffee counter that shows two doors and a top drawer with thinner rails. I haven't take any pictures after the kitchen is completed as now I am trying to get my cooktop repaired and have set up a temporary portable unit there so it's not good for pictures taking. Hope this helps!...See MoreAnyone here NOT choosing Shaker cabinets?
Comments (43)A small beveled edge on the inside of a stick and cope recessed panel can still be considered "shaker", but most of these doors pictured above do not qualify as shaker. Shaker has become a popular buzzword to refer to almost any recessed panel cabinetry, but most recessed panel cabinetry isn't shaker. If you have anything other than just a plain stick and cope with either a 90 degree inside edge on the door or a simple 45" bevel on the inside door, then you don't have shaker. You can refer to it as "modified shaker" if it's still a very simple look, such as a bead on the inside door profile instead of a bevel, but when you start down the road to applied molding or mitered doors, you've veered completely out of shaker territory. You're in the land of "recessed panel" cabinets. That just doesn't sound as sexy or au courant as Shaker, so the term shaker is used. Bee's kitchen, and Cloudswift's kitchen, though both are quite lovely, are NOT "shaker" doors. Enduring is at the borderline of calling hers "modified shaker" as the bead has almost a little too much detail for the simplicity of true shaker. And they are still beautiful kitchens, no matter what the actual label might be for them....See More4 drawer banks with shaker style--flat or pieced?
Comments (24)When I was researching cabinet styles, I noticed a correlation between door and drawer details. The simpler the style, the more likely you'd see slab drawers, sometimes all slab and sometimes mixed with 5-piece drawer fronts. As cabinet styles became more detailed, there was a much slimmer chance of seeing them paired with slab drawer fronts. As buehl discovered, plain fronts don't look as finished with more detailed doors. Drawers that echo door details just look better. I think you could go either way and I'd be more inclined to aim for a balanced look of stile versus inset panel. 1" clearance between stiles doesn't seem to provide that, IMO. Your wider stiles sound more like the contemporized Shaker cabintes that Ikea offers. Perhaps you can find some inspiration by looking at photos of Ikea kitchens. There are several in the FKB. Here's an example of a 4-drawer bank next to a 3-drawer bank from mindstorm's kitchen (link below). You can see more photos if you click on the link to the photo album from mindstorm's FKB page. Comments (2)Shaker will look fine. Here's a shot of our upper cabs. They're 30" tall. The right most door is 11". The others are 10". Since your cabs are taller, you might consider placing an additional rail in the middle of the door. As far as the doors being too narrow for shaker, I think you'll be OK....See MoreRelated Professionals
