historic farmhouse/colonial home new build exterior trim paint help
Comments (0)We built a home modeled after this historic home in our downtown. We have now decided against shutters and are looking for help with trim options/paint color. We were considering a light green with white columns and white trim around windows. i've seen some pictures now of a gray house with red board and batten garage and I am intrigued. We are using hardie and probably SW but could go with any paint. Any suggestions would be fantastic! Thanks in advance!...See MoreHelp with exterior color scheme of new build and any other advice
Comments (24)Thanks for the feedback all, MB Custom especially. I’m going to try to sketch up those changes over the next couple days and get them to the builder. The only suggestion that I’m back and forth on is the doorway in the living room to the deck. I have it positioned there so that you go out under the covered portion of the deck. I know it will limit furniture position. To be honest, we aren’t really living room people. We spend our time between, kitchen, bedrooms and deck. Same with dining room. That table is more for collecting mail. It will be a small 4 person table. Regarding not making changes. I’m know I can still make changes but at the end of the day, I have 100’s of hours into this and looking at other layouts and this is the best I could do to meet our wants. My main goal with this design was to keep as much on the back of the house as I could. I’m sure I should have hired an architect but the builder seemed confident that the engineer could draw it up. I am going to try to incorporate suggestions and I’ll see what you guys think. Cheers....See MoreExterior Help- New Build
Comments (12)PPF is right; a "farmhouse look" should have a porch rather than a portico. But there are other elements that are equally antithetical to the look you want. The massing of the house is choppy with no clear structural form or main house" typical of farmnouses.. The paired windows are a bit odd too. If you're going to put windows that close to each other, the sill and head trim should be continuous. This may just be poor drafting. Many exterior walls have little or no fenestration. It's not a barn. Farm houses often have seemingly random but identifiable additions but in this design the randomness is in the upper level which is more typical of builder designed tract houses. I recommend getting a 3D computer model of the design. I think you would see that the randomness of form doesn't create the vernacular charm you seek. Where is the project located? I suspect its own a warm dry environment....See MoreHelp! New build - style and exterior finishes
Comments (17)You could span the porch with only one post; it just means the beam must be sized propely and it's not holding up much. Buying a slightly larger beam would mean saving 2 posts and their footings — should be a no brainer. What is behind the two windows in the big gable? You could raise the sills of both windows but the limitation is if either one serves as the emergy escape and rescue opening for a bedroom in which case the sill is limited to 44 inches off the floor. Historically, pairs of windows were always about 6 to 8 inches apart to make room for the sash weights which are no longer needed but if you want the house to look traditional it's a good, easy way to do it and the header can be smaller. There would only be one wide trim board between them inside and outside. I see no problem with deleting the black windows (can you get black sash?), metal roof and vertical siding. They don't belong on a Colonial Revival house. IMO the irregular post spacing in the photo looks amateurish. A farmhouse is a building use not a style. Historically farmhouses have been of many styles but east of the Mississippi they were generally of the Greek Revival style that swept the nation in the middle of the 19th century. The land west of the Mississippi was settled later and farmhouses were generally of the vernacular/folk Victorian style. You will find a bit of both styles in "modern farmhouses". Greek Revival farmhouses were often white but not Victorian houses which is where the dark windows originated. I once modified the design of one of 10 rowhouses as they were being built. The developer liked the modified unit enough that he built the next 10 using my design. I mention this because I believe that if the builder is paying attention, he will recognize the value of a better design for less cost and adopt it....See MoreRelated Professionals
