Comments (4)Thanks--definitely got good info, I know. Guess I'm just down to the wire and can't find exactly what I want to model it after. T-minus one week to having to order paint. :( Internet research, toured several historic neighborhoods in the area, checked the library, and even tried to work the virtual house painter thing on the Benjamin Moore website and still not 100% sure. Thought I was sold on light yellow for clapboards, dark green for shutters and white for bandboards, scalloping and trim, but then I worry that yellow might be too "cute" for a big house. Oh well...I'm just not great with color--takes me forever to paint interior rooms and this is ten times worse! :( Sarah...See MoreNeed color help with exterior paint on 1902 Victorian with bad siding
Comments (7)Your windows can be repaired. Just because the glaze is gone and some wood is rotted doesn't mean they need to be replaced. There are video's on my windows page to show how the work is done. I know the enclosed porch really comes in handy but it's a very important choice you need to make. It is visually impossible to achieve curb appeal with it enclosed. Boarding up windows saves heat too but that doesn't do any good for appearance. Your house was not designed for the porch to be enclosed. Past architectural perversions create a disfigured appearance that affect your inner senses when viewing a building that abruptly sticks out. Instead of softening the facade of a house as a porch is supposed to do, it instead appears as an architectural wart - attached but not belonging. Your house can be stunning - even with the current siding. New paint colors will look nice but the problem will still be there but in a different color. Think about it. Everything takes getting used to but you can adapt not having that extra space. Good looks and everything good comes with a price. Good luck!...See MoreHelp with exterior color scheme of new build and any other advice
Comments (24)Thanks for the feedback all, MB Custom especially. I’m going to try to sketch up those changes over the next couple days and get them to the builder. The only suggestion that I’m back and forth on is the doorway in the living room to the deck. I have it positioned there so that you go out under the covered portion of the deck. I know it will limit furniture position. To be honest, we aren’t really living room people. We spend our time between, kitchen, bedrooms and deck. Same with dining room. That table is more for collecting mail. It will be a small 4 person table. Regarding not making changes. I’m know I can still make changes but at the end of the day, I have 100’s of hours into this and looking at other layouts and this is the best I could do to meet our wants. My main goal with this design was to keep as much on the back of the house as I could. I’m sure I should have hired an architect but the builder seemed confident that the engineer could draw it up. I am going to try to incorporate suggestions and I’ll see what you guys think. Cheers....See MoreRelated Professionals
