Exterior help please
Comments (7)The exterior would be greatly enhanced with the following: 1) Landscaping is critical. I would remove what you have now and start over with a plan. Get expert advice from your local plant nursery. Landscaping alone can really amp up the curb appeal of your home. Get something that is easy to take care of if you are renting this home out. 2) Beef up your front porch columns, they look spindly at the moment. You could have a great front porch area by extending the current slab under the portico all the way across from the front door to the left wall. 3) Accent your window frames - black, white or even red. Something like the insp pic below (black shows here below) 4) Paint your front door a sunny yellow like the pic below. Eventually replace it, the half moon does nothing for the style. 5) Trim out your windows to a beefier trim and paint white. What material is used for the carport? Canvas? Metal? It's hard to tell from here....See MoreExterior help please!
Comments (2)Certainly the large shrub needs to go and because of the very low windows, you really can't do more in front than low groundcovers. But the house could and should be softened by small trees or large shrubs at the corners, at a little distance of course. and linked to the front of the house by the same groundcovers....See MoreBungalow Exterior Help Please
Comments (7)Gray doesn't go with the stone or the roof. Depending on your budget, you could cover the existing (or new larger) porch with a roof and two posts. Then you would have a more functional entry (no one wants to be out in the rain trying to get in the front door as quickly as possible) and the appearance of the stone would be minimized. Painting the door trim white is still a good idea, and changing the color of the front door and shutters would help, too. The trim on the roof peak over the front door probably should be white too. I like the earlier suggestion of a green front door. You will need to view paint samples next to the stone in order to see what shade of green works. I think you would have difficulty getting a blue or red to work, but colors look different in person than they do on a computer. The reason people always recommend against painting brick or stone is because those materials need to be able to breathe. Painting them also creates an ongoing maintenance requirement that doesn't exist with plain brick or stone....See MoreExterior help please:) Colonial not symmetrical.
Comments (34)Agree with Beverly's ideas on a porch cover here and the smart Houzzers above who say that, yes, beefier window trim is the upgrade to make here that's in-world. A friend recently redid a Colonial in the Northeast and the impact was huge in shifting from the same trim schedule you have here to one that featured wider casing and a defined sill with apron at each window. It was a true wow! Further agree with the folks that mention that shutters aren't needed here, or changing a window size, but that adding window grids - 6-over-6 upstairs and 6-over-9 or similar downstairs - can further help create order and balance here. Really fun potential - cheers and enjoy!...See MoreRelated Professionals
