Suggestions regarding kitchen island
Comments (4)Redoing the wrapper with something dark walnut or cherry? If you have some inches - wrap with shallow depth bookcases. A good cabinet guy could make you matching wainscot and tint it close to your existing cabinets. For that matter, you could always pull the island completely and replace with a matching or contrasting new one with legs or corbels or lowered surface or whatever else you want....See MorePlease help with Island shape
Comments (6)Yes, rhome, I have you to thank for the layout! After months, we're still working on the plans, but we've pretty much stuck with the kitchen layout you so kindly helped me work out. Now, I'm on to the island. I was actually thinking of wrapping seating around the end by the dining room bc then you could have people face each other. I agree plllog, it's the fact that most of the diners are facing a different direction that concerns me about the piano shape. I'll have to think about the reverse P. Would you then run cabinets on all parts other than the curve? How many seats do you think you could get around the curve? How would you support the P? A base column in the center of the half circle? A center base cabinet? Would that look weird? I'd want to be able to manuever all around the curve, so I would hesitate having columns around the circumference of that P. Remodelfla, there is about 6 feet between the island and the line of cabinets that separates the kitchen from the dining room. Right now, we have a rectangular island that has a big arch on one side. I really like that arrangement bc I can line up all my kids on one side and give them a snack and I feel like I can address them each equally (spacewise, if that makes sense). The problem with the piano shape that concerns me is that my kids will be at various distances and angles (and all not facing me, which I already have problems with!), which may seem weird. At the same time, I don't want to go with a rectangular shape like we have now, bc I want to fill up some of that large open floor space and also fit in more cabinets on the top part of the island. I don't necessarily need the piano shape, but I think something that juts out on the top left makes sense. I also just don't want the island to look weird. Thanks!...See MoreSuggestions for Legs or Corbels on Island Overhang
Comments (8)My, do I remember my struggle over legs, corbels, or naked! I ended up going without a leg or corbel as it suited my kitchen better. I wasn't necessarily looking to make the island look like furniture. The room is visible from the front door, family room, and living room. We've been back in the house for about nine months now, and I'm very happy I chose to forgo leg and corbel. I like the maneuvering room without a leg for stools and bodies. A corbel may have given me that feeling also, but didn't fit my style. I'll link my thread from last year with my pros and cons, and those of others here, of various options. Maybe some of the pics and discussions can help you. You didn't mention plans for stools. If you will have stools, you'll only be able to fit three in that 7' anyway with or without legs. One of the biggest ah-ha moments for me on my linked thread was that the stools would always be in front of the island taking up visual space. Only you can decide if the addition of legs makes a big enough impact to warrant inclusion. Good luck! Comments (20)You need pendants with chain. and EXTRA chain and wire. Or the fixture must come with a pivot and the ability for additional stem or customization on the light order.. . It would help to know the highest ceiling elevation. A 126 inch island is not HUGE. You need nothing close to an 82 inch single fixture. It will take OVER : ) Three pendants, forcing light down onto the counter would be just fine. No wider than 15 inches if three and no more than 18 to 20 if two. . You can augment with recessed as well....See MoreRelated Professionals
