Ashley furniture or havertys?
Comments (5)I usually buy much higher quality stuff, but I went into both stores to look for a BR set for my 3 year old -- something that I wouldn't mind her chipping and scratching, etc. and that I could get rid of when she leaves for college. The Haverty's product seemed to be slightly better constructed, with wood veneers instead of particle board, better blocking in the corners, etc. I have one other piece from Ashley and after 2 years it looks awful. Definitely "disposable" furniture. Have you considered saving up a little more and buying better quality stuff that will last you longer? Nothing like having to buy a new couch in 5 years because it's falling apart. We just bought a huge (11' in each direction) fabric sectional from Smith Brothers, with a lifetime guarantee, for $7k. I don't plan on having to buy another sofa until I retire in 20+ years....See MoreCheap furniture
Comments (6)New to this forum, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents, as a total bargain hunter. I like to redecorate. A LOT. With every change comes some new furniture. So I go the cheap route. In my experience, places like VC Furniture, have the bottom line prices, but also bottom line quality. If you bought something that was never going to be sat in, maybe - but with regular (not abusive) use from two people the last set we had, needed new cushions within about 7 months - they were flattened, and the upholstery appeared loose. Last sofa I bought from Ashley's was AWESOME. Great quality, beautiful, and super inexpensive, since I found it in their scratch and dent section - Not sure how it held up over the years though since I sold it about a year after. I am learning what everyone has told me all along - you get what you pay for... :) Happy shopping....See MoreCoaster and/vs Ashley Furniture quality
Comments (3)Hello Avi, I think you have done some good shopping and have good expectations. In general both companies can give excellent bang for the buck quality. If I invent my personal 1 to 10 scale Coaster items might range from 5 to 8 and Ashley 5 to 8.1. Coaster living room furniture I would generally rank lower. Ashley dining room furniture has some hits and misses thanks to durability issues of the table tops. The Coaster bedroom set you listed I do not know personally but I like. We have too much dark furniture on display lol. Your set has full extension drawers which are a neat thing and they generally do not put them drawer guides on their cheaper sets. So having not seen it I would bet if you don't let your significant other set cold beverages down on the night stands and ruin the top finish it should last you decades. The Levon Charcoal is a pretty decent Ashley stationary sofa. It is big and we have had issues with it fitting into homes but never with quality. I like it and the feel. Ashley's parts availability is great. With that serial number under the left side facing seat you can call your dealer and get a new seat cushion or padding if needed. It has a wide throw and from home watching the sick kid I can't remember if there is a center leg or not....if not and if you have a bunch of 300 plus pound friends maybe think about one. True for all sofas though. You are not doing the sleeper sofa, correct? Ashley's Birnalla dining room I do not know personally and can not see specs on. It must be homestore or back door dealings exclusive in my area. Go to the store displaying it, sit down with a spiral notebook on it and write out the cost of your pieces. If that finish doesn't look perfect when you are done pass. Ashley has some dining sets I love. They have some which are for show only. GENERALLY their dark glossy finishes suck so I think you will be ok but I urge you to test it out. How does the company you are buying from rank with the BBB and are they local to you?...See MoreHow to paint furniture so it looks antique
Comments (10)I guess what I'm looking for is some recommended paint colors and glazes to consider. "Soft blue" is very vague. I don't want it to end up looking too stark. I'll check out Juddgirl2's Baby Turtle I've googled, but without specific key words it's hard to find good info. Most of what I found was paint and sand off. I knew that going in. I've painted a lot, just not furniture, so I know how to prep, just not what colors. I found antique paint and antiques with original paint. I did finally google, "shabby chic painted furniture how to" and found My Romantic Home blog. I hadn't really considered using the "shabby chic" term to google before, but there it is. I think this is what I'm looking for. I really like the bluish gray cabinet she did. cooperbailey, no, not a MD neighbor. I live in plain ol' Texas, aka Plano, TX. DH works from home for a company out of Bethesda. His company has their annual holiday party in January, so I tag along. I get to roam around while he's working at the office. I LOVE that there's so much to see within walking distance from Wisconsin Ave, unlike where I live in the 'burbs where I have to drive all over.
