Recreating Bangkok balcony in Boulder, please advise!
Comments (11)Just refreshed this and found Digit and Jennifer have answered while I was slooowly typing my response, so some of these things have already been addressed, but here's my reply they way I---slooowly---wrote it! Hi Cyndi, Some questions! Which direction does it face? How many hours of direct sun do you get, and will you get as the days get longer? So youre planning to put the pots on the shelf? Or on the floor in front of the shelf? If youÂre putting things on the shelf, you wouldnÂt need anything too tall to give you a little bit of privacyÂbutÂwe get a LOT of wind out here (how long have you been in Boulder?), and many, if not most, of the things you put on the shelf will probably blow over if theyÂre not secured somehow. AlsoÂanother how long have you been here questionÂif youÂre growing things in pots, even pretty big pots, do you know that they may need watering almost every day in the middle of summer? Clay pots will dry more quickly than plastic or ones made out of some other impermeable material. I donÂt know much about bamboo, but IÂd be surprised if that worked for you with the space you have, and even in the ground, it would take a while (couple years) to grow upÂand there arenÂt many varieties that are hardy to zone 5, and theyÂd probably be even less hardy in pots. Maybe somebody else around here will have more advice on the bamboo idea. The first thing I thought of that you could possibly use on the shelf to help with the privacy thing is Purple Fountain Grass, Pennisetum setaceum ÂRubrumÂ. The plumes get a good 4 to 5' tall, and it grows pretty quickly when itÂs warm out. Should be available at any "real" garden center in springÂHarlequin would probably have it. Here are a couple pics of the one by my front door in Â08. Never got that pot planted last year! ItÂs an annual, so you need to get new ones each year, or try to overwinter one inside with lots of sun or a lightÂthatÂs what I do, and it doesnÂt look very good over winter, but IÂm putting it out during the day now, and itÂs perking up nicely. Will divide the one I saved into four pieces, and that will give me enough for what I want to do this year! (Click to enlarge) Besides that, there are lots of annuals you could grow in pots that would bloom most of the summerÂall different heights and colors. IÂm assuming you have a fair amount of direct sun! Answer the questions I asked above, and IÂm sure we can help with more suggestions. I donÂt know about the "Bangkok" look, but there are lots of things you can grow. Could even stick in some basil or some other herbs to useÂbasil is easyÂand it comes in purple types that are great as ornamentals too. Are you students? Gonna be at the same apartment/condo next year? Oh! And one more thing! On March 23rd weÂre going to have our Spring Swap in Longmont this yearÂso not very far from you. YouÂll find it all explained at the swap link down below! Welcome to RMG, Skybird...See MoreWhat would you recover these chairs with?
Comments (14)Thanks y'all. I'll feel some naugahyde and check out the outdoor fabrics. I do like that one, Teacats--definitely the sort of thing I thought I might want. As far as saving the padding, no, it's really not worth it. Looks like it's just a square of that yellow half inch cheap stuff, not even covering the entire seat. I think it's the same puffiness as when it was installed. Thin. And the set has given my garage that eau de thrift shoppe so I'm very happy to chuck the cushion. The needlepoints aren't as detailed as they look in the photo (explain that, somebody!) but they are in pretty good shape--I don't think this set was used much. Probably because of the lack of cushioning!...See MoreAnyone have a leather Eames lounge chair?
Comments (28)you want an aniline dyed leather where the color goes all the way through, not where just the surface is dyed. we have cats and the very minor surface scratches they have made show an ugly white. if the leather were aniline dyed and the black color went all the way through, it would just add "character" and not show a different color and look tacky. It was the sales rep who recommended that because the chair was for home use I didn't need to spend the extra money for a top grade leather. I am distressed that I followed that bad advice because I usually opt for quality and longevity....See MoreRecovering ottoman II
Comments (31)Hi! Sorry I thought the thread was dead. Designer guy fell off the earth so I haven't seen the plaid sample or an alternative suggestion from him. While out shopping I couldn't find any blue fabric that was right. Most were the wrong material or color (I took my fabrics and paint samples out with me.) I managed to find one blue fabric that was 'ok' but at $60 a yard I passed. Found an oatmeal and cream fabric remnant in a clearance stack for $7 and bought it figuring I'd get something else if it turned up. What started out as just looking at the ottoman yesterday triggered a full on 'just get it done now' upholstery session. I'm so thankful DH was kind enough to help me pull (most!) of the staples out. To my surprise it actually ended up being somewhat difficult due to the size. I'm not used to seeing it so not sure what I think. Not happy with the sides. It's not as smooth as it should be. I think I was maybe over focused on making sure the top was smooth and not dimpled from the holes. (I succeeded.) Teeda - That's ok. I hope you're feeling better by now! Jjam Yes, we use it for our feet. I really like that blue fabric with the gold! I much prefer that over solid blue. I don't know why I didn't think of that. I had a terrible time finding blue fabric. I don't think the light color will get dirty but this will be a good test. The kids don't eat or drink in here. Peppa you're seeing Teeda's generous mock up, lol. After liking Teeda's mock up so much I ordered this print and plan to frame it in gold. It's a little larger than the floral painting I had. I also ordered this one for over the wing chair wanting to tie more blue and it will have a simple black frame. I'll post photos when the art comes and I have the room in order. I'm not sure if I'll keep the ottoman in the cream fabric or recover in a blue. I do really like the fabric Jjam linked to with the gold and kind of wish I would have discovered it sooner. I need to live with it for a few weeks and see. I'm considering this lamp for beside the wing chair. Was going to use it to the right between chair and tv. There's not a ton of space so I think something with a fabric shade isn't going to work. I could maybe do a torchier lamp but I don't really care for them. I originally wanted brass but found this one and like it in the 'rust' color shown. I also like that the height goes up to 62" and the head adjusts and can be angled vs. just straight out. This was option two. Only goes to 55" but I think I remember reading a review somewhere saying it only goes to 53". I'd have to check again. I think the one above would fit the space better. Feel free to chime in on lamps. Of course the ottoman is now the cream/oatmeal fabric....See MoreRelated Professionals
