hard freeze predicted tomorrow night
Comments (49)I'm really unsure of the extent of my damage. I checked my apricots and there seemed to be some tiny fruit that was still solid and normal looking. I could open it up but I might as well wait. The plum blossoms and all open peach blossoms were frozen solid in the morning but look normal now. I might as well just wait and see what everything does but I really think my unopen flowers will be fine. Just about 20 miles south of me in Westchester County, NY, there seemed to me no damage and no frozen blossoms at all, even though I arrived at a site there before sun had hit them. And this was a site at the base of a hollow. What pisses me off is I was grafting in Greenwich today and even though they are a zone warmer than me there trees are at exactly the same state of development- what's wrong with my site! The best news is that most of my customers seem to have gotten off scott free....See MoreEEEK....Low in the 40's tonight!
Comments (16)Okay- it's COLD up here tonight. Just after midnight and it's down to 35 degrees. Saturday's prediction is 32. I protected the hydrangeas, took my last cuttings and seeds from the impatiens and I'm letting them go to the frost. I hate doing it, they are my faithful friends, but sooner or later I need to clean out all the beds here so I can move on to holiday projects. I also buried my pots of mini roses and gave them all little mounds of fresh mulch. And Claire, you'll love this- I left the ES hydrangea out there with NO protection. HAHAHAHAHA. Like I care, right? RIP ES, make my day! I hate socks too. But I get so cold I can't stand it, so I've gotten used to wearing tights under my jeans or slacks. I've got so many blankets piled up tonight it's like one of those lead blankets they use on you at the dentist to take x-rays. -Nan...See MoreHigh will be 80 !! on Tuesday...
Comments (18)Enjoy that warm weather while you can. Holiday shopping is much more fun when it's warm out, imo. Plus less dangerous without the icy streets and highways. We often have warm weather like that in SoCal in late fall/early winter. I remember when I hosted my quilt groups annual get together several years ago and we had to open the windows, it had warmed up so much. I loved it but then the older I get the more I love warm weather any time of the year. : ) Our recent storm continues to linger around the mountain tops, bringing us another dusting of snow last night. It's melting fast as the temps rise - it's almost 40! lol! I took a few pics of some blooms still holding on. The penstemons are my favorites - real troopers and such vibrant color, although I didn't do the best job of capturing it. If you'd like to see them, they are in the Winter page at the bottom. Comments (35)Dad farmed near here, London, Ontario, then moved to Prairies when I late teen because of breathing problems (pollution and humidity here, 60 years ago). Univ. and seminary in a city on the Prairies, 10 years in Korea just after Korean War helping refugees get settled, son needed eye care in this area, I was minister in churches this area ... till Sue and I parted ... clergy didn't do that! Spent some time on prairies, took stockbroker course, didn't find that work there, but did find work with mutual fund sales broker near here when came to visit my teen kids this area, boarded for a while with friend, then lived in rooming house. Didn't sell mutual funds long (too few sales) but enjoyed personal financial advisory, despite poor income - "why pay you when I can get same advice for free?" ... well, not quite the same recommendations, usually! Moved to share rental townhome with a guy, he later moved in with widow (sort of temporarily ... turned out she liked the dog better than him). Stayed there for over 15 years. Both kids not too far away. Stayed with childless Uncle for a couple of months after his wife died, after his death about three years ago, oversaw house for about a year, moved here to what was Uncle's beef farm when it was bought by a sod farmer and he offered to rent the house to me ... at about 2/3 of the fee in town. But I have to haul water, as the well is too close to former barnyard (which is now my garden). Shi! can be helpful ... or a nuisance! Two bedrooms, filled with too much stuff ... with more in the garage and the barn. Son lives in the city that I left, daughter recently moved to AZ ... she says I'm to go to her new place for birthday, in middle of next winter. Living on a farm ... in a village ... in a suburb ... all are O.K. A variety of friendly, interesting, helpful people wherever. ole joyful...See MoreRelated Professionals
