young transplant - put in a pot, or leave in burlap?

hello!

I need to dig up a baby volunteer fig tree, and I've never moved a tree before. (This one is going to go in a pot, as it will be a gift - assuming it lives.) (I moved a rose once - that was a to-do.)

I was planning to put it right into a pot, but is it easier on the plant, if I leave it in a nice burlap ball, like in this thread (https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/6353482/how-to-hand-dig-b-b-and-drum-lace-root-balls#n=7)?

After all, I really don't know what the roots will look like. (And if I do put it in a pot, I should bare root it first, right? That too perhaps argues for a burlap ball. I will do whichever is easier on the plant.)

It's a very small tree. It is about 5' tall, very skinny, is defoliated now, and didn't grow fruit. It has one short branch, near the bottom. It's young, I think I'd have noticed if it had been there over a year. I will eyeball with a ruler, but I think it is going to be about 1" diameter.

Do you wet the ground at all first? The soil here is pretty tough. I think I'll have to, really.

If there is already a thread that covers all this, I would be happy to get the link. I looked at the "featured" posts but I don't know where people pin things anymore.

Thanks in advance!
