Layout Help: No Idea How to Make This Functional
Comments (3)These are just rough ideas but perhaps they will help spark better things. :) The two things that jump out at me are that the range (or cooktop) should be on the fridge wall and the island should be made a normal rectangle, not L shaped, and be all one level. This gives you a deeper surface for prepping, which is more useful than having the surface interrupted by a change in height to the bar level. From there, I would probably choose to put the fridge at the top of its current wall (with a 9 to 12" pull-out pantry between it and wall to allow for the doors to fully open), OR on the bottom wall with the pantry and ovens. Most likely, it would be better in the former location so that it is easily accessible to the family room. I would also probably change to a range instead of cooktop and wall ovens. However, that's your preference. Alternatively, I would look at leaving the fridge where it is, making the rest of the wall pantry space (can be shallow depth), then put the range, sink and DW (left to right) on the back wall, taking up all of it. An island with a prep sink on the left end floats in front of the back wall. There are two issues with this - 1) I can't tell if you really have room for this because your drawings are too small, please repost a bigger/clearer size and add measurements, 2) I would much rather have the fridge on that back wall as well and make the left wall all shallow pantry so the island can be longer, but with the two windows on that back wall I'm not sure you can fit both fridge and range - again, an issue with the drawing. I hope this helps, and I'll check back in for updates....See MoreAppliance Lifts - Are they worth it & lots of other questions
Comments (12)My cabinet is 18" wide, but the lift mechanism is only about 12.5" wide, so my cabinet is extra wide. It is also deeper than a normal cabinet; ignore the empty space in back. (The extra space was to get my island the right size.) There are almost 10 inches below the lift, where I store my hand mixer and extra mixer pieces. (Like my mess?! :)) I suppose you could have a pullout here, but I don't mind it as is. Appliance lift in up/locked position: The tabs you pull on to release the lift from the up position back to storage: Appliance lift, on its way to storage (assisted by my stool, for the sake of a photo :)) : Appliance lift in the storage position: Where my mixer is positioned, it just clears the countertop on the way down. If I had a larger mixer, I would have to pull it forward on the lift to account for extra height. My mixer is about 14" high. I have my mixer as far back as possible because it feels better balanced on the wood when in use. If you do get a mixer lift/cabinet, make sure the door opens away from where you plan to stand. I am not a big cook.... so I can't answer all your questions. We have room to spare in our kitchen, so the mixer/lift cabinet didn't take away from anything else. I don't like anything on the counters, and I don't like lifting this hefty mixer. Thus, this cabinet works for us. It makes it more likely that I will bake for my DH because it's convenient. ;) Your other questions.... Yes, it feels sturdy.... but I don't do any crazy cooking.... no dough here. Also, it doesn't feel weird to me to use standing next to it......See MoreAny experience with lift-top cocktail / coffee tables?
Comments (9)When I refreshed my living room I purchased a lift top table because DH sits on the sofa. When he wanted to play games on the computer he would sit on the floor and use the sofa as a back rest. I saw a Paula Dean table at a local furniture store that wasn't bad looking (it actually looked quite nice in the store). I bought it and DH was thrilled. It brings the table top right up to his height. I have two major issues with it. First, it looked fine in the store but at home it looks like a big, dark, decorative cube sitting in the middle of my room. It weights the room down. The second issue is we have a two cushion sofa and DH refuses to sit directly on one of the cushions and move his laptop over. He now sits right on the division between the two cushions which is causing a down trodden look to a three year old sofa. I would rate the table as a ten functionally but a one aesthetically. If you can find one that isn't enclosed it will look so much better but you will lose the storage function....See MoreMulti-function Laundry room help
Comments (20)I need to bump this thread again. Final thoughts. Will make closet with louver door a regular door with cat door access to litter box. Shelving in there for the printer/fax machine, kitty toys and litter stock. Possibly to the left of door entrance make a wall counter to fold clothes??? If I move sink to far right, it will only leave 18" of counter and then it would bump out. As for the desk, maybe an L shape. I would be facing the wall but the window would be to my immediate left. Thoughts? I wish I had a program to see a perspective....See MoreRelated Professionals
