It's just a toilet.... right??
Comments (25)lazypup: "I also consider how many of each brand I installed in 35 years and the percentage of customer call backs for each brand" Fair enough; but for the first half of those 35 years, you were installing and removing 5 gallon per flush and 3.5 gallon per flush toilets, and no toilet currently selling in the United States is based on those outdated designs. (You also were not installing Totos back then, because Toto toilets were not yet being marketed here.) Your conclusions also appear to diverge from the experience of Terry Love, who presides over the Internet's largest toilet forum and whose company has installed thousands of toilets. Comments (23)linelle: "Washlet seat? Holy crap. I had no idea. When things get that bad, I just stick my butt under the tub spout and start over." "Washlet" is a registered trademark of Toto; no other manufacturer can advertise its seat as a Washlet without risking a suit for trademark infringement. However, like "Scotch" tape and "Band-Aid" bandages and "Xerox" copiers and "Coke" cola beverages, a lot of people use "Washlet" as if it were a generic descriptor. Toto Washlet advanced toilet seats are very good, but are not the best of breed; that medal belongs to Inax advanced toilet seats. Inax -- which is the #2 Japanese plumbing fixture company in size but in Japan has a more prestigious image than Toto -- invented the category, and has remained the technological leader in that category for 30 years. Lixil, the name of the corporate group of which Inax is a part. purchased American Standard last year, and you will see a lot more of Inax in the United States going forward, I am sure. (My guess -- only a guess: American Standard will play the Toyota role in the United States, while the Inax brand will play the Lexus role.) But as to the story of advanced toilet seats as a purchase that you W-I-L-L make in the future, you should know that, in Japan, more than 90 percent of households already have them, and the Japanese now look down on our primitive American toilet hygiene in the way that we North Americans view the use of pit privies in third-world countries. Anybody who has used an advanced toilet seat for a period of more than a week or so is not going to go back to a primitive toilet seat. Never ever, ever. As to advanced toilet seats, Americans are in the stage that we were in in the early 1980s: "Why would I want a computer in my house?" Comments (25)Hey Lindybarts!!! We had Kohler in the other house and have 4 Totos in our new home. The Kohler's always backed up and in almost a year (you're right has it really BEEN a year now?) we have had NO problems with the Totos (we have the Whitney). I have to laugh at the "slamming of the lids"....been there, done that....and it IS embarrasing! I don't remember did you have to pick out your toilets or did the contractor? If you did there's probably not much he'll do for you. Even if he did and the job was done correctly there's probably not much chance if it's the toilet design... though if it was installed slightly off balance it could be his fault. Another option might be to contact Kohler and see if you can upgrade (though you'ld still have a Kohler). On a side note.....Superchick... On a side note...at least you still HAVE a builder...ours is apparently fixing to go belly up and didn't pay some of our subs, so now we have two liens on our house! And all the punch list stuff will have to be contracted out by "yours truly"! SIGH... That kind of thing just eats at you doesn't it! But I know exactly how you feel. We didn't know it when we signed him but our GC's wife had just moved to Texas with their kids (her family lives there). As our build progressed (or should I say stagnated) GC spent more and more time in Texas and finally moved there. But, we hear he's now divorcing and moving back to California (lucky for Texas-bad for California). He still won't return calls and didn't KNOW the meaning of the term "punch list". But I'll bet you anything he'll want to show our house off to his next victim...uh I mean client. Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreBest toilet out there? Worst?
Comments (19)Thanks Melissa, Jle, Susanelewis, Suero and Jacobse, for your suggestions and comments. I bought my 22 yr.old house 4 years ago. No probs whatsoever with the exisiting 22 yr. old toilets. I'm having a tile floor put in the guest bath though, & was advised that now is the time to change the toilet if I think I may want to do so down the road. I hate to replace a trouble free, perfectly fine-looking toilet with something that gives me grief! I have frankly never used a plunger at this house or the at the 100 yr. old one I owned previously for 13 years which had toilets at least as old as my current ones. Have never seen a leaky toilet. Obviously, toilets have always just kind of been there in my life; a real non-issue. Now that I may need to buy one, & have started doing research, my eyes have been opened to the potential pitfalls of toilet ownership. How I yearn for the days when I never knew that a toilet could be such a troublesome loo! Nothing is simple anymore is it? Like so many things...they don't make them like they used to (for better and for worse.)...See MoreRelated Professionals
