Comments (51)Well, if you're looking in Mecklenburg county, look at Matthews. There you have the Little League, the Farmers Market, local businesses, access to I485,strong town leadership,a town green where they hold spring/summer/fall concerts/arts and crafts shows/childrens carnival. Matthews is very independent of Charlotte. They even repave their own roads. Taxes are cheaper than Charlotte and the town has plenty of corporate and manufacturing tax support. Good banks..BB@T is the strongest most solid bank in North Carolina (no TARP funds needed). Local theater for plays. Lots of church variety to choose from. One church has its own K-12 school (Covanent). Matthews School (elementary) is still excellent. There are actually multiple elementary schools, middle school and high school although assignment is determined by your location and schools are part of Mecklenburg County public school system. Big, new, town library. Presbyterian/Matthews Hospital. Marios Pizza, Carrabas and tons of other good eateries. Siskey YMCA (huge indoor outdoor facilities) The weather is a micro climate in most parts of Matthews. It can be a touch cooler/colder than Charlotte and Pineville but in 20 years and one hurricane (Hugo) I found the worst of the weather skips west of Matthews. Water quality is good, better than what we have in Union County (different source). Of the Mecklenburg towns, including Charlotte, I'd say Matthews has best adapted itself to accommadating northern transplants while retaining the Southern flavor and hospitality....See MoreWhere in Virgina should we move to? Comments (70)Hi, I grew up the NY Metropolitan area and worked at JFK and LGA airports most of my life. For the last 14 years I lived in CT on a small âHobbyâ farm of 7 acres. Iâve gone from owning 7 acres with 6 outbuildings of various sizes and functions to an apartment that is 900 sq. ft. in size. Iâm now living on Long Island until my lease expires at the end of this coming April. Iâve experienced both ways of living. Iâm a 68 years old and live alone. My son and three grandchildren live on Long Island while my daughter and three grandchildren live in Arlington, VA. I plan on moving to VA to live âNearâ her and her family. I know near is a relative term. Iâve looked at the map time and time again and Iâm at a loss. Iâve thought it might be sensible to live near either of the two commuter train lines so I could visit with her or spend some time in Wash, DC at the various museums without the hassle of notorious heavy traffic. I have no idea of the communities to visit when I go to VA in February to look for a place. Iâm not looking for a large place. Actually something the size of where I am now. A one bedroom or something like that would be fine. I prefer a mixed aged area and do not want to go into an over 55 community. Iâm also wondering is realtors are used to find rentals or if itâs something you seek out on your own. Comments would be appreciated....See MoreColor suggestions: Exterior Paint for Beachfront Home
Comments (32)Hi Sueb20; we're around the corner in MA on buzzards bay. Many newer builds around us use the pre-finished shingles, which in the long run are more economical than painting every few years. It boils down to putting up the $$ now to save later. I always take the easiest (and least expensive) road. Painting this house is so costly, and it's literally a money pit w/ one major thing after another...having to put in sewer; french drains for flooding; a leaky roof; and on and on. And yes, neighbors are another tricky issue.. Wouldn't want to "steal" their paint color! Me too...about a fun door color. Like the idea of teal blue to match the ocean...but would that be stealing an idea from you?? I'm leaning towards lighter colors for the house...maybe something creamy w/ a clean white on the trim. I have been inspired by posts here, and especially by the Lettered Cottage blog -- my new fav. addiction. Thanks for the input. I'd do raisin if i had a different husband....See MoreCoastal My Living Room
Comments (408)Oh wow, it seems like you just moved into this place. How exciting. Keep the space minimized as you have it. I would actually remove the TV too and just stage as a sitting room. When in doubt, remove. You want it to be non personal....See MoreRelated Professionals
