Are wall size mirrors 'out'?
Comments (25)I am popping over from Home Decorating as we will do a total gut job on our bathroom and I wanted to hear what has worked for people. I love this question because it is one I struggled mightily with. Bottom line, IMHO if you have children who will use the bathroom, a mirror large enough it can be mounted just above the back splash and look 'right' will be the most user friendly for them thus makes the most sense, design fads be danged!! I have two baths. We purchased the house with framed mirrors in each. The downstairs I replaced immediately with a full wall mirror no frame. I could care less what the design police say. It is a small small space and the large mirror expands the space/light mightily. The upstairs I replaced the same way, then brought back the framed mirror as the little ones became teens and could see themselves. It is the bath we are re-doing and the framed mirror is the only present "fixture" that will return. (I did paint over the gold gilding with white before it re-appeared.) Mirrors are not that difficult to swap in and out...do what YOU want!!...See MoreLiving Room - I'm at a loss...plz take a look!
Comments (43)Great rugs!!! Though I'm still drawn to the PB one. The blue in that rug is this color: http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/benjamin-moore-natura-paint-old-blue-jeans/?catalogId=5&bnrid=3580801&cm_ven=GoogleBase&cm_cat=Shopping&cm_pla=Home%20page&cm_ite=Datafeed Not as deep as my Newburyport...do we think the that will be OK? As to the panels, what if I go with a wallpaper. Thinking maybe something not bold...with the white, and pull in maybe the gold or light brown or rust, in a pattern. So it breaks up the white, but doesn't look as choppy? Carry it down to the bookcase? When I'm searching fabrics...would I then pull the same color for panels? So if I do a gold or brown/rust on the front wall, pull this color to the panels? Solid? Maybe pull more blue, tie both the blue on the walls and the blue on the rug, with some pieces put on display on the bookshelves? The items on the shelves, and on the walls, are not necessary to stay. I have a happy home for the rug and the art work in the adjoining room, which for the next 6-8 years will be toddler play room... As for the furniture...this is why I've been reluctant to hire a designer. In our old house, I asked a designer to help me to select furniture. He was persistent that I needed THREE different color and texture pieces. It went against what looked and felt right to me, but I doubted my taste (I'm an engineer afterall, what do I know about style?). I don't have a good referral for a designer around here that I feel I can trust, and I'm not about to go pick one willy nilly to spend good $ and end up being disappointed....See MoreReveal: Long & Narrower White, Grey & Green EIK

Comments (24)Sorry if I got some people confused - the picture I posted is not an inspiration picture, just one I found with chairs similar to what I have. I think if I don't paint the hutch, I have to find a new home for it. I think it is the main thing not working in my "dream" view of this room. I would say it photographs way better than it looks in person. I got it many years ago at an auction, paid $350 for it and my husband was appalled I was willing to pay that much. But that was when it had no back and the mirror was falling out. The doors don't close right, needs the hinges taken off, the holes patched and redrilled so the screws are tight. I'm normally against painting any furniture, but I knew when I bought this piece that it needed to be refinished. I also did some research on it (from the label on back) and it's nothing special. I don't want to put a mirror, picture or anything like that above the hutch. All along it was suppose to have shelves of some sort there, which is why it's got beadboard, it's meant to look like the back of a cupboard, not part of the walls of the room - another reason I don't want to paint it the color of the walls. This is helping me a lot. I've had to think long and hard why I didn't like the idea of painting the recess and putting a picture or mirror there. They are very good ideas, but just didn't feel quite right to me. I learned the hard way to be careful not to let myself get talked into something that is beautiful, but does not make my heart happy. After we built our house in WI, I decorated it based on a lot of magazines and resell and stuff like that, and in the end I felt like I was living in someone else's house. Since the house was brand new, it was almost like I was afraid to put my stamp on it. Now that place had a view! This was out the dining room window....See MoreRelated Professionals
