Antique table, bench, thingie ...

I've started painting our library walls and this is giving me plenty of time to think about things we might "need" to complete the space. I decided I wanted a small table or bench to go in front of the sofa to sit down a drink, books, what have you. Today I happened into a large antique mall that used be one of my favorite old haunts and unearthed this little table... bench... thingie? from the back of a cluttered booth. The seller was using it to display other items and it didn't have a price tag, but we worked out a deal that made us both happy. It's obviously old and I believe it's made of oak. It has this rather odd little inset of old slate tile. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea where and approximately when it might have been made, and for what purpose. It's 36" long and as you can see, not terribly tall. I believe the style may be referred to as a keyhole or trestle table or bench (or thingie). Despite a small area of wood splitting, it's remarkably sturdy and heavy.
