Antique Telephone Chair/Table
Comments (17)Hi, I love your telephone table! It is in great condition! Last year I was antiquing and found a table like yours that was not in as good condition and it was priced $35.00. There were some scratches in the finish and the upholstery on the seat needed to be replaced. I think yours would be worth 60.00-75.00. That is a conservative estimate on my behalf. I don't feel that it is poplar as that does not hold dark stains very well at all. Usually poplar is Painted with a base color and then a finish is "built" up on it, using faux graining techniques. Of this I am very confident of. Yours does look to be a true hard wood, I would say mahogany. If you look at the back to the chair it has a poor stainig job on it. I think it may have been refinished at some point by someone who was not experienced....See MoreAntique table?
Comments (7)There's nothing wrong with turpentine. Just a bit aggressive with a teak oil finish that was mentioned in the post referenced, IMHO. I'm not a chemical fan, but in this case, it would could really help rejuvenate the OP's piece. As for Howard's Feed n Wax... No, it won't do any harm, but it won't do a lot to actually clean the piece. Howard's makes some fairly decent products. One thing I like about Howard's is that they have no qualms about making their products MSDS information readily accessible. The "feed" is intended to mean feeding the wood, not so much the finish. The idea being to provide penetrating oils that help replenish the woods natural oils. The wax is more for the finish. For a gentle cleaner without really getting into the finish, I've always had good results with Formby's furniture cleaner. http://www.formbys.com/products/buildup_remover.cfm Nice little piece, and I love the hardware! Comments (42)I very rarely shop on eBay, but today I decided to do a quick search for a Stickley or Mission stool, and I found an awesome antique oak mission stool with a ratty upholstered top that I'll replace. It was listed at about 140 and I offered 100 and it was accepted. A bit more than I expected to pay but it was so unique, I had to have it. I may not even use it in this room -- we have Stickley pieces in the living room and dining room/library too, so it could go in any of those rooms. Can't wait til it gets here!...See MoreSo Cal (OC) Folks - Cheap project antique pine cabinet on CL
Comments (36)Funny you mentioned the bun feet - I realized that when I was driving it home and remembered the picture posted had bun feet and also looked smaller. The CL photo seemed more similar to the smaller English pine dresser we use as DD'S nightstand, with bun feet. Maybe they had 2 dressers and 1 sold first. Did you save the picture posted on CL? It's still a nice piece and is a great size for a bathroom vanity. The right door hinge was loose when I looked at it and broke, I think when they were loading it into my car, although now I'm thinking it would look really nice with the doors off and open shelves for towels and such. It's just more of a project than DH wants to take on right now, and we already have more than enough furniture we already need to move 2000 miles away :) We're still finishing up some remodel projects before we list the house. This is the pine cabinet I bought and am now selling because it's taking up valuable real estate in my garage :)...See MoreRelated Professionals
