Help! Our new house needs some serious curb appeal.
Comments (4)Way to go! Nice house! Everybody will have their own opinions about what looks aesthetically pleasing... For me, I'd enjoy a row of spruces, the nearer the curb the better. Why not have your soil tested and have the utility companies come out spray paint your grass for stuff you'll need to avoid. How long do you intend to live there? If you plant larger trees they give you privacy quicker but cost a lot more. Additionally, plant some 1/2 barrels and put flowers on that patio. Update your front door to something nicer? Just my opinion, your mileage may vary. Gus...See MoreHELP! I would love curb appeal ideas for our hawaii home.
Comments (14)There are 3 things that jump out to me as ways you could could make improvements without taking out a second mortgage. The first is painting. There's nothing wrong with the present color per se, but the "barracks" paint scheme -- of everything being the same color -- lacks in punch and interest. I earlier got through speaking about it in another thread and my advice would be the same here. I think the overall best general scheme is some version of grey/taupe with white trim. In order to make it work, the body color must be dark enough such that white is a contrast. If they're too close (as your color is now) is just doesn't have the necessary punch. But you could take the same color and intensify it. Search Google Images for "taupe (and grey/ seafoam/ sage/ mauve, etc.) house with white trim" and you'll see the vein of schemes I'm talking about. Some of the greys can be too "cold" so watch out for that. And steer away from too strong of colors. If you were to go this route it would definitely make the porch area stand out with greater importance since it is comprised of a lot of trim. (I would not paint garage doors white, just the trim. Also, what helps improve the look of garage doors is replacing the top panel of each door with a panel that has windows all across it.) Another way you could improve the overall looks is to re-do the front walk, as it has amazing power to set the impression for the whole house. A skinny little walk makes a whole house look cheap. Yours is average, but it could be substantially improved if made wider. Bringing it farther from the house and creating a larger landing would bring greater stature to the whole "entering" experience. The third thing you could do is improve the landscape planting. Nothing about it now jumps out as horrible and there are some nice features (mainly palms) within it, but it is a long way from "showstopper" quality. If you want some general suggestions on that, retake a battery of slightly overlapping pictures with the camera lined up with the center of the house, while standing at the edge of the street (a little closer than these pictures.) Pan the camera from far left to far right showing surroundings of the yard, and do not change position between photos....See MoreNeed your help with ideas for improving the curb appeal of our new hom
Comments (31)We are now ready for landscape design help. We have removed all of the shrubbery on the left side of the house. And all of the pavers have been moved to the backyard for future use. ( unless someone has an idea of how they could be used up front. Although I understand that a curved sidewalk would be an improvement over what we have, there is no budget for that right now. The plan is to resod in the spring. This is north facing, so very shady. I have so many design dilemmas! To the right of the front porch: If you look at the second and third pictures in my original post, you’ll see that the area to the right of the sidewalk is huge. I purchased a green Japanese maple ( smallish weeping Viridis) to put in there somewhere. Should I leave room for more grass on the right side of the side walk or just plant the whole thing? Also on the right side of the porch, there is only about 39” between the ground and the bottom of the windows. Need suggestions for what to plant there that wouldn’t need constant pruning ( don’t like gardenias because the brown flowers stay on the plant). If I plant low shrubs under the windows does everything else planted in there need to be as lower lower or can I punctuate with some taller shrubs as I get further out. Any suggestions for a mix of shrubs, or even forms, would be appreciated. To the left of the porch. If you refer to the first picture in this string, You’ll see that a very large bed of shrubbery was in front of the house. Once we cleared that out, there is now an extremely have extremely large area (about 28 feet from left to right and 36 feet from front to back.) . Because the house is small, I’m thinking of that bed somewhat narrower so that it isn’t so much in front of the house, but more to the side.I already purchased a Japanese stewartia to plant there ( sale at the nursery).Etsy sale I purchased 234 limelight hydrangeas. Also, to the left of the porch, there about 5 ft between the bottom of the window and the ground. Looking for suggestions on what to plant there. If I plant something different here than on the right side, would I want to somehow use some of the plants from the right side on this side as well to create balance? Any ideas for plantings in this area would be appreciated as well. I I did see some soft touch mahonia that I loved and wondered whether they would look good under the windows on the left, with maybe whatever we plant on the right side in front of those. Additionally, I would really appreciate suggestions for what to plant in that left corner. Thanks for your ideas!...See MoreNeed some curb appeal help for our mountain house!!!
Comments (13)i agree with most comments especially on how to treat the doors. Imagine looking at the picture you showed us & the ski door is same color as house - it’s gone! I like your idea of adding lighting to entry especially around the front door not storage door. If you want to add interest to that side wall with no symmetry maybe think about adding a locally interesting wall ornament that’s weather proof. Iron art? Snowboarder? Per @Olychick comments,be sure to hang it above the snow line!...See MoreRelated Professionals
