Comments (11)Thanks for the kind words. I call this bathroom "classic on the cheap." The subway tile is cheap american olean subway tile from lowes, $1.76/sf minus 10% coupon. The liners are the 1/2" x 6" gloss black liners also from lowes, as are the 6x6 tiles. The vine deco tiles are also from lowes. They are a slightly different color white (they are "ice white" instead of "gloss white") but you can't tell really especially with the black liner separating them. The only thing I couldn't get at Lowes was the black chair rail and I special ordered that from my local tile store. It actually cost less per piece than white chair rail from Lowes, so don't assume the big boxes always have the lowest price. It's the same exact American Olean black gloss as you find in the liners at Lowes. You can also special order the liners - for 3x the price, though I do admit that it took several trips to the store over the course of weeks/months to get enough of the liners for my project, but I used a LOT of them. They're like $1.18 a piece or something so using 150 of them is not a huge $$ outlay. The floor is once again cheap cheap cheap, it's white on white daltile octagon and dot from Home Depot, $2.29/sf minus 10% coupon. I made a border using the white and black octagon and dot. Here's a better shot of what that looked like before they covered it up: The paint is Ellen Kennon's Aqua. For more info on Ellen Kennon's paint check out the paint forum here. Her paint is NOT cheap but I used less than a gallon for the whole room so it was worth the splurge. It's gorgeous stuff....See MoreFree standing v. drop in tub
Comments (3)I also have experience with both. Naturally, I agree it is a matter of personal taste, but a few additional pros/cons: * Having the deck to put candles, soaps, extra books, glass of wine, bath oils, whatever, can be very nice. * When comparing costs, remember that you save money on installation of the freestanding styles because you don't need to buy the stone deck top or tiles, and the labor to build the surround, etc. So while many freestanding styles cost a little more, depending on what models you choose and what type of deck top you would select, the freestanding may end up being less expensive. * To take full advantage of the beauty of many freestanding styles, it may depend greatly on your layout. They seem particularly well suited to being placed in front of beautiful windows, with ample space around them. Personally, I think they lose something if they are sort of shoehorned in somewhere. But of course, that's just a matter of judgment. Good luck! I think you can't go wrong either way--both styles can be beautiful....See MoreHelp - need advice on updated a master bath tub?
Comments (2)My tub was from 1999 so way worse! Yours does not look bad! I updated 3 years ago to a free standing tub and love it! You will have to replace flooring though since it will show on a free standing tub. You will also have to fix the walls where the tile was. We did a total master bath remodel. My recommendations would be to go to a large bath/kitchen showroom and sit in some tubs to see how you like them! Also to figure out the size you want. Most run very large. I am only 5'2" so didn't want a 7' tub where I would just float around in! Mine is 5 feet I think and its perfect....See MoreHelp please/Master bath remodel free standing tub idea
Comments (2)Is the den a feature of the master bedroom? How does the bath relate to the master? You don't want to get to the front door and remember to go back and get a jacket in that closet; what a trek! I think the den closets need to be incorporated into a gutted bath to add some square footage into the footprint of the bath. Put dual sinks under the two windows and put a free standing tub out in the floor area so it can be a feature, and so your housekeeper can keep the floor around it clean. You could also incorporate the WIC into the bath and change the den to a dressing room/closet....See MoreRelated Professionals
