Looking for inspiration, ideas & photos
Comments (9)I know this isn't garden junk, but I've been making jewelry from silverware. Maybe you could try that. Over on Crafts and Decorations I have some spoon pendants and beaded bracelets posted. I even made some lapel pins from silverware. I plan on using my grandchildrens photos in one, and you might be able to make a pendant with your mother's photo( a copy of course :) ) and some of her little things inside it. I used my grandmother's tatting in ones for myself, and pieces of old crochet and tatting I found at yard sales for ones I'm selling. You could put in small pieces of her old jewelry,or just anything that reminds you of her. I hope this helps with some of the silverware. Here is a link that might be useful: spoon jewelry...See MoreInspiration Pics/Ideas needed for teen DD's room (B&W, turquoise)
Comments (17)shellfish: Oh, lovely room. That is right up my alley as well! I'm so envious of your space! I like the idea of the white coverlet which I may add in winter below the duvet. DD and I are still looking through the samples though lean towards a more saturated color like boxerpup's DS's room, then a lighter shade for the ceiling. Hope to narrow it down to a few paint samples to test on the walls. DD has little patience with me as I wanted to show her the inspiration pics. I'd rather she just pick a look she likes and let me narrow down the paint colors to 2-3 that match the one in a picture. That has always been my difficulty in doing her room--she just focuses on one aspect, the bedding, WTs or paint and not how they all look together in her room, with her floor and lighting. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done in terms of room layout at present and it's not possible to remove just the head and footboard. It's a captain's storage bed with four drawers which she uses for her clothes. In another year my DS will most likely go away to college then I think I will let her move into his room which is a smidge larger and then we can do something similar to paintergirl's rendition. In which case I'll be repainting both rooms in a year's time. If it wasn't so hideous right now, I'd just wait another year, but she and I both hate it and the bedding and WTs can simply move to the other room when the time comes. I lvoe the paint color in the living room photo above and think DD would agree to that since it's so vivid. That B&W accents really seem to mitigate the intense shade as I'd hoped it would. Does anyone know what color that is?...See MoreLooking for lighting inspiration (or really any inspiration!)
Comments (4)my advice would be: go on the big site where people are selling vintage..and I'd start with Etsy. search there for vintage lights..mention flush mount/semi flush mount. even better type "mid century modern" when searching. I'll tell you why-this was a time of lower ceilings. So there were plenty of very nice lighting for lower ceilings. and it was mostly great quality too. hardly comparable to what it is out there now..in normal price range i mean look what they've got there. almost all my lights are from Etsy, Craigslist or EBay , and I have..well not that low but mostly standard ceilings except for the entry and the living room. when I was searching for the lights i understood very fast that my options in new are either too expensive or too bland. even though since then i saw more and more new central lights for standard ceilings appearing. it's like the manufacturers heard me lol yet still, if they're cheap the finish is not as great..they look nice but only from the distance, or on the picture in the internet. and if it's great-they stop being cheap lol so. i'd really check into vintage but if you'd rather not, for various reasons.. check Shopcandelabra-http://www.shopcandelabra.com/lighting/ceiling-flush-mounts/flush-mount they have several options that are more modern/rustic/industrial that you might like, along very traditional ones (they have semi flush mounts too..http://www.shopcandelabra.com/lighting/ceiling-flush-mounts/semi-flush) the choice is not bad, the pricing is over the range..given it's a very expensive store, generally speaking-i was pleasantly surprised recently to see there more options it won't be as great price/quality correlation as if in buying vintage. but it will may be faster and simpler and not bad. say i'd rather recommend them than West Elm that recently carries several flush mounts. check CB2 as well. didn't hear anything especially amazing about their quality but i saw them expanding their choices but make sure to read the return policy really well. restocking fees, etc. especially when it's free shipping)) you can find good deals in similar lights on Gilt.com and OneKingsLane. com..also, check the return policies-Gilt became really bad in it lately. On the other hand they often run additional promotions, coupons, etc. they have pages upon pages of lights. and collaborate with some well-known sellers from Etsy that make lights of their own rather than sell vintage. you can find them yourself on Etsy when looking for new lights-all sellers there are extremely polite and responsible, for 99,9% of the time, and are a pleasure to deal with. some new lights made in US and sold there are really cool. but then, as always, it won't be cheap. on the other hand, there is something real nice in supporting local smaller shops that are just starting out, rather than huge chains that are already doing quite well. that's a cool home..I wish you luck:) Have fun with it..it has a big potential...See MoreVictorian Inspired House - New Roof/Shutter/Garage/Doors Paint Idea
Comments (9)There is a large camp of no shutter people on Houzz. If they don't function or are not as large as they should be to function - get rid of them. I sometimes agree, and sometimes feel like the shutters add color and interest and are there purely for decorative reason, and this is perfectly okay. Your description of Victorian Inspired is also fine. It is not a Gothic (Think Haunted House) or Queen Anne Victorian, but it has the general shape and feel of a Victorian home, which is why you used the word "inspired." "Queen Anne homes are the quintessential Victorian home: They are asymmetrical, two or three (or more) stories tall, have steeply pitched roofs and large wrap-around porches. They are often adorned with differing wall textures and ornate trim—which gives them the “gingerbread” effect commonly associated with Victorian homes—that is typically painted in a variety of accent colors. Some Queen Anne homes also have octagonal towers (topped with a round pointed roof) and ornate bay windows—in short, nothing about these homes is subtle." Not all Victorians are the quintessential Victorian. Here is one that was featured in Architectural Digest. If all you want to do is change the color of the shutters, door and garage door and you found something that you think is beautiful a few blocks away, I would go knock on their door and ask what colors they used. My experience is that people are truly flattered when you knock on their door and ask something about their color choices or landscape choices. I have ended up in long conversations and even been given home and garden tours by doing this. I have gotten plant cuttings and been given samples of paint when the label was unreadable. I have never been turned away or scolded for admiring someone's home....See MoreRelated Professionals
