Design Dilemma Home Decorating Living Room

Hello! I just moved into a lake house and need help coming up with the best seating options for a smaller living room that’s open to the dining room. I need new couch/chairs/end tables/coffee tables, and paint! If you have any ideas for what to paint the beams, I’d take that advice too!

I plan to paint the walls a soft white and have black accents. The staircase is going to have black spindles (metal) and painting the honey oak on the steps black.

first I would find an area rug you love, large enough to ground/define the space.

I'd keep the furniture light to make the small space appear larger, more open.

Swivel chairs, glass top coffee table. I don't see the ceiling, but I would consider painting it darker, so it brings it down a bit. Black spindles are fine, but do you want dots of black scattered around a white room? I'd think about painting all the woodwork the same color you choose for the walls. Whether light or dark.

Decide whether it is a lake in the woods or a fresh natural lake house vibe.

Having 2 comfortable chairs is equivalent to a sofa, as has been stated no one sits in the middle seat. That’s why people opt for 2 chairs over a loveseat. Although, I’ve Found when I have guests, often times a couple sit together on the loveseat.

Thank you very much. I figured it would be better to pair back and simplify things. My husband likes the cabinets but I thought about painting them black or grey, if I can't convince him it would be better to remove them completely. Love the idea about the black frame on the fireplace.

If the TV can go on the garage wall, I like the idea of two chairs in front of the fireplace similar to this first photo, and a music center similar to the second photo between the two seating zones. It would create a tall grouping to visually divide the two zones, and beak up the long expanse of wall. The wall system Sabrina Alfin Interiors posted yesterday is very handsome, but if it’s too costly, something like this can work very nicely. I like the way they painted the wall behind the shelving.

The cooler tones of black and white will be fighting the warm tones of your floor, trim, and fireplace stone. I’m not sure if the style that black and white portrays will work that well with the existing architecture and built ins of your home.

I have never seen a truss beam running through a room at 7 ft. How did that happen? I would at least learn if the support can be moved up. Call in the Amish if necessary
