Kitchens Lighting Design Dilemma

Messed up the location of pendant lights

Centered it to our tray ceiling instead of centering it on the kitchen island. Now they are too close to the edge of our small square island. Have to start over tomorrow. Hate patching up dry wall as the textures seem to never match, but hopefully it's high up enough that we won't notice it. Anybody make this mistake before?

Did someone advise you to install the pendants in this configuration? Horizontal/length-wise across the island is where they should likely go.

We're wrestling with a couple of different code references here. In general: 1) You need at least one light in the bathroom that is controlled by a switch located at the entrance to the bathroom. 2) Light fixtures within tub and shower spaces should be marked "suitable for damp/wet locations". 3)Hanging fixtures cannot be located within a zone of 3Â horizontally and 8Â vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. So just because a pendant fixture is "damp" rated and meets provision #2, it can't be installed within the tub/shower zone due to provision #3, which prohibits hanging fixtures. Provision #2 is so fixtures in damp/wet areas do not corrode and become electrical shock/fire hazards. Provision #3 is so that if someone is standing in the tub or in the shower and slips, they don't instinctively reach up and grab a low-hanging pendant fixture and pull it down into the water with them as they fall. Hello fellow TPOers- I have to put this aside for now- more pressing decisions to make. But one last word: Rebecca: If you like the bell jar lanterns in the last photo that you posted- go for it! You don't need to obsess about matching your peninsula chairs to the finish on your pendants. Ha Ha! I know you already are obsessed, but honestly I think you could make those work. How many inches are they? That will determine how high you would need to hang them above the peninsula. I would guess and say in the photo above they hang about 3 inches before the top part begins. Now because your ceilings are 7 1/2' you may need a smaller pendant- do these come in different sizes? Note the photo of Nini's kitchen that I posted above- her lanterns are very close to her ceiling. I'm not sure of the height of her ceilings as she is not on the FKB. Do you like the way hers look? Now I've added one more photo. Do these pendants look familiar? Is this what you are going for??? Decisions, decisions.....Good luck and let me know what you decide. PS How is the demo going?

David, If I had places to connect four or more orthagonal lines, I would do that. But the trees aren't well-situated for that, and I'm not sure about installing fee-standing poles. They might be a little too intrusive, visually. (If we went with slimmer metal poles, rather than redwood posts, they might not stand out as much. I may need to investigate how strong metal poles would have to be, and how I could get them fabricated.) The cantilevered umbrella system is a clever idea, but I think that would be too big and intrusive for what we have in mind. We have another outlet at the edge of the patio near the table. I suppose we could go with one of those under-umbrella lighting kits that would attach to the ribs of our existing market umbrella and run the cord from beneath the table to the outlet. We were hoping to have lighting that leaves the dining area open to the sky, but that may not be practical.

The type of lighting that is typically on its own switch includes pendant lights and over sink lights. This allows for more control over the lighting in specific areas of the kitchen. In terms of combining lights, you can consider combining the under cabinet lighting with the pot lights to provide overall ambient lighting in the kitchen. The pendant lights over the seated counter can be combined with the over sink light to create a focused task lighting area for food preparation or other activities at the counter. For the room size of 10'x16', having 6 pot lights should provide adequate lighting coverage. For outlet locations, it is recommended to have outlets installed along the countertops for convenient use of small appliances. Additionally, consider adding outlets near the seated counter for charging devices or using small appliances while seated. Be sure to follow local electrical codes and regulations when determining outlet locations.

This type of issue is why I want (need) a designer for my kitchen renovation - or at least a lighting expert!

What size is your kitchen island (including countertop) - is it exactly square? Also, post a photo of your pendants + add width/height of pendants.

I'd want to be 100% certain of where they should be reinstalled (maybe you already are - but it doesn't hurt to have some concurring opinions).

You must be excited to be so close to being finished! Who manufactured your countertop?

Where is the cad drawing of the kitchen, with the cabinetry and island , and all dimensions? AND the chosen pendant are what and what size?

Nobody can advise what makes sense from your picture: )

Am I seeing two dishwashers.....is this a kosher kitchen? One is inconveniently between an oven door and your sink??

It’s hard to see the relation of the lights to the island in the photos but do you need pendant lights? Can you put some smaller recessed directional lights in the areas you already prepared?

So, that mistake might give you the chance to make a better choice. Pendants are a time-honored option, but they are busy, smaller lights. You could choose a chandelier instead that would provide more flexible (and just more) lighting with a more current profile.

Sorry, looks a bit odd in photos. What are the island dimensions?? Is it square or nearly square? Such as 48" x 48" If that were/is the case? I'd have done a single, much larger pendant and treated the island as you might a square dining table

Too late now : ) But I guess you were in a hurry.
