Terri, my daughter used to live in Echo Park, near Silver Lake. It's one of my favorite parts of LA. Currently she is living in the Arlington Heights neighborhood, so in the middle and not currently impacted by the fires. I talked to her yesterday and she said the air quality was bad and the winds terrible.

I live in an area (Sonoma County, CA) that has suffered terrible losses from fires that destroyed entire urban neighborhoods and I know the fear and heartache that can remain long after. I pray for our SoCal brethren, the first responders, and the animals.

It is horrific, Terezosa, and my thoughts are with you, your daughter and her friends. I can't begin to imagine the loss and suffering to so many people. I have two sets of elderly relatives in the L.A. area whose adult children (my cousins) are doing all they can to get them out. They are not in immediate danger, but the loss of power for even a few hours is detrimental to them. I'm hoping the winds continue to abate and the fires are brought under control.

We keep turning on the news...hoping to hear the fire is contained....it's not. It's so hard to see the after math of fire. The loss of such a beautiful place...such a tragedy. My heart hurts....

I was sent an evacuation alert in error for the Kenneth Fire, which started at 2:30 PM today. Evacuation orders affect Calabasas and Hidden Hills in Los Angeles County. Conejo Valley area?

The smoke is reaching south Orange County. This is probably 50 miles south of the Palisades fire.

I posted on the the other thread that a friend of mine lost her home in Pasadena. It’s such an unimaginable tragedy for so many.

Terri, I posted about the fires on my snow storm thread. It’s just awful.

The Eaton fire took a friend's house in Altadena. Another friend in Oak Park is packed and ready. Other friends and family are out of harms way but still impacted by the winds and smoke. Much like hurricane Helene here in the mountains, this is hard to wrap my mind around but the tragedy is all too real.

It's terribly sad. The only thing to take solace in is the relatively low loss of life. Let's hope it is all contained very soon.

Dlm, a friend's daughter also lost her home in Altadena. Got out with a suitcase and her two children. I can't even imagine.

We flew into LAX Wednesday night. I was struck by how terrible the fire smells. It wasn't a campfire-ish smell, like a typical big fire, it smelled like burning plastic.

Edited to add, the landing was very bumpy because of the winds and it took two tries for the pilot to find a safe path. It's the first time I've ever been on a flight where the passengers clapped after landing.

Looking at LA Times photos of the devastation in Pacific Palisades I saw that one of the neighborhoods that was leveled is where my late husband had lived growing up. He also graduated from Pali High, another casualty of the wildfire. His middle school was lost as well.

My youngest sister and her family are in Santa Monica, and have been packed and ready to go if/when they get the orders. Sis messaged me about yesterday's false alarm there.

NPR.org has an article about the landmarks and cultural/historical sites affected and I was very sad to read that the wonderful Will Rogers house is gone - not sure if the stables were burned as well.

I’m about 20 miles away, so only feeling the affects of the smoke and ash. Thankfully its a bit better today. Some family members, closer to the fire zones, have been without electricity. Also packed and ready to go. I have two nephews working the fires.

My sister-in-law lives in Thousand Oaks, and the utility company, So Cal Edison, cut electrical power for 24 hours. No fires nearby.

She said SCE also plans to cut power for 48 hours for the next Santa Ana winds that are forecast. County government in Ventura is supposedly protesting the proposed SCE action.

@nancy_in_venice_ca are they cutting power to reduce the risk of causing more fires in case the Santa Ana winds take down power lines? I think about that devastating fire in Maui that was caused by power lines that went down from wind and caught vegetation on fire.

That's exactly what I've heard reported as well, pricklypear.

SCE is cutting power to ALL customers in Ventura County regardless of where they live — in a city or in a fire-prone area.

I think the issue is the wide net that SCE is casting — every customer is affected by their decision.

LA’s Department of Water and Power didn’t cut off all customers.
