Dating Trestle Dining Table & Chairs
Comments (3)OK, I've got the photo thing figured out, same message with the pix: I just purchased this antique trestle table and four matching chairs, and would like to try to determine the approximate age. You can cut and paste the URLs or see the album at the link below. Here is the whole set, the top is a single piece of hardwood (I think oak?) which was varnished dark in antiquity. It is definitely a single piece, and I have checked this from underneath. All features are irregular throughout the chairs and table, and appear to be hand made. There are no screws or nails in the construction of the table or chairs, the only nails appear on the leather upholstry. Edge of the table, note irregularities, wear and patina: Peg construction on the table, note that the pegs have risen and are no longer flush with the table, due to the wood contracting over time. There are also pegs on the trestle legs, which show the same amount of rising. The stretcher on the table, note the slight irregularities in the carving: Carving on the trestle uprights, matches the carving on the chairs, again there are tiny irregularities in the carving: Ladder back chairs. They appear to have been recovered with leather at a later date: Upclose on the carving on the chairs, which matches the trestle uprights, note the wear on the chairs is appropriate with use: Underside of a chair, note there is a fabric or canvas layer under the leather. The chair frames all have wooden support bottoms, similar to a drawer bottom. The The nails holding down the leather are round head, but are all irreagular from each other in shape and size, plus there are a couple of square head nails mixed in. The outer upholstry tacks are dome head and definitely look mass-manufactured. These are the only things that seem to be. Again, I think this upholstery is later than the set. Under the leather is some straw-like material used as padding. It looks clean and not terribly aged. It was either well-protected under the leather or is a more recent addition:...See Morevintage dining table - need help identifying period/era/style/woo
Comments (51)@lindac, thank you!! Yes, once upon a time our family was large enough to take up that table and more. ;) I know that's one reason my mom wants to keep and restore it. I will look for someone to create leaves with an apron. I never have it without at least one leaf in it anyway. And, I am hoping to use it fully extended in our next home....See MorePlease Help Me Date A Table
Comments (39)smh? What does that mean? The possibility of your piece being constructed in the 70’s is more than likely. The wood itself is antique pine, stripped of its former finishes. Recycled by woodworkers to resemble furniture of old, it was once, at least here in New England, a popular decorating trend. I do not see it anymore, nor are the stores which sold it still in business. Once in awhile I see something in a consignment store, but it has past its glory, at least for now. You have one: of a collection of farmhouse tables, the designs based on old world styles but individually made. Tables are crafted to order from wood reclaimed from the roof joist or flooring of old buildings in any size or shape required. Farmhouse tables with leg, trestle and pedestal designs which are reflections on European country furniture styles. By acquiring a piece of reclaimed furniture, you have eliminated the need to cut a new tree. Old pine tables are rough hewn distressed. Those finished with wax will have an uniquely rich, soft, low-luster finish. I know your table. I had it, and so much more if it, 20 years ago. Walk into a store and there were many variations of your table. Hundreds and hundreds of different pieces were available…headboards, end tables, dining tables, cupboards, shelving, on and on. And that was just locally. Vintage, if the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s fall into that category, is your piece. Wood is antique. I am not putting your table down. It is a valuable as the person who wants it. However, it is not a fine antique....See MoreWhat style of chairs would help to date/ improve this table?
