H. And what can we say about H? Heck it is cold outside.

So much destruction in California right now. And in the Los Angeles area where some of us are from. These fires are arson set which makes it worse. Please keep California in your thoughts today.

On to hostas which stats. what a surprise, with the letter of the day: "H".

How did they get hospital corners on those beds? For me it is a pass.

I do not have any wild Iguanas here, but I hear they are coming.

Hi Char, The way I've been buying hostas in the last 5 years there's no way I can keep the reprinted list up to date loll.. I'd be reprinting every 3 days lol.. The main reason for the originator names is when people have visited in the past and see something they like and say that's from Benedict isn't it, I have to get the data sheet out and see for myself. I do have a master database I keep records of everything on like Bloom Time, Bloom Color, Fertile, Sterile, Pod Fertile, Size, Color, Leaf Shape, Etc. I do create a label that goes on the back so I know the bloom time of the plants here also. If I were to have a show garden then I'd do it differently for sure.. I'm really starting to like the looks of the clean labels I've seen in some nice gardens. I'm thinking about changing the way I label after seeing what others do.. I may just write Hosta and it's name on the front and put the bloom time and Originator on the back :-) Believe it or not I've had a few people stop and ask what kind of plants I had in the yard. Â Â Hosta 'Big Daddy' I also like to use the 15 inch legs cause with 3 kids here the more I can stick inthe ground the better. Instead of the kids pulling the labels out of the ground I just find a few bent ones from time to time :-) . Sorry for high jacking the thread but it's great discussion to see what others write on labels also and get some tips along the way :-).

Dee: I leave them out all winter. Granted, we don't usually get large amounts of snow here - just lots of ice since we hover around the rain/snow line. These rubber treads are not at all slick. The pattern is like a web with holes in it for the ice to settle in. I'll occasionally lift them to shake off the ice, although sometimes the ice is too thick to to move them. I tend not to use those granite steps when it's too icy anyway; I have an alternate route down the bluestone paver path (which has different problems). I have to shovel these anyway to feed the birds so I don't always bother to shovel the path away from the granite steps. The rubber treads are best on my wooden porch steps which are partly sheltered and essential for my getting out and in. Claire

Continuation of the First cone's theme: ;-) My Pinus cembra started to cone last year, right after it was planted in early May. Documentation says, 'Seed cones appear after 40-60 years'. Wazwidat? My tree is only ~5-7 years old from what I can tell but is a grafted variety if that matters. They are 2 years to maturity cones btw. I don't know how it got pollinated but it could've been from another type of pine via hybridization. This year there're still those same seed cones that should be ripe by this Fall. No cones yet on the ponderosa var. scopulorum pine. They can cone at 10-20 years and mine is at 7 years old so any year now. It did try to make a cone in June 2022, but fizzled out and didn't mature. Immature cone P. p. scopulorum 2022.

what a sad situation in LA 😭😭😭..

I wonder if I might have the lowest temperature in the group today..3 hours ago it was 4..up to 14 now..high of 25 for the day..

I wouldn't sleep in those beds..

High Society. I struggle with this one. It's in a spinout bag and has been in that bag too long.

Other H's not photographed. Finally purchased Halycon in 2023. Now I know why others have it. A great hosta!

One of my brothers lives only blocks away from the evacuation zone for the Eaton fire. He and my s-i-l stayed, and we think they’ll be okay, but so many people aren’t. It’s tragic!

Shadow I am happy your HB was alive. I have the same issue with a couple that I will lose if I do not rescue them.
