Kendrah can u source these gorgeous greens ?

I love your bathroom--it's a classic 1920s-1930s look. Love the wall tile, and the faucets you're considering. Personally, I think a pedestal sink would be more appropriate than a wood vanity--you would never have seen one of those in an early 20th century bathroom. If you need the storage, a white painted vanity would look better. But it all depends on how closely you want to stay with that look.

Regarding wall color, that should be the last decorating decision you make. Get all the messy stuff done first, then you will be better able to select a wall color.

I had a vintage black and white bathroom. Over the time I lived there, I had it painted Pear Green and then eventually changed to a Tiffany blue. Both were great. I used chrome fixtures and hung some pen and ink framed drawings.

I love the black walls picture that Diana posted above. And above that Beverley posted a very dark grey walls picture.

The black and white is so classic and since you have the high ceilings and a lot of white - you should have no trouble integrating a dark colour above the tile walls.

But would you consider wall paper instead of paint???

Green goes particularly well with a reddish umdertone. I’d go darker than a dusty color because of all the light that will reflect off of it from your skylight. But if you really want dusty I’d try the one shade darker on your strip. I’d narrow down your choices and then get sampilize swatches and test them out taped to the wall. You don’t want to keep testing on your wall or you will have a hard time painting over them.

Here are a few SW colors that you may want to get swatches for and hold up against you vanity and floor.

Hidden trail is more like the dusty ones you are looking at but with a deeper green.

Twig basket is a different direction - a khaki color. Could be very handsome and masculine against the black tile, more of a neutral, but might look too light with all of the light in your room.

Roycroft in your light might read more like the inspo pics I posted below - moody.

Replacing original floor tiles with the same type because of a few cracks on the original, seems to me to be hunting a way to simply spend more money. Superfluous.

Hi Adrianne, so glad you told us the "look" you are trying to achieve--that's the most important factor when choosing paint color and accompanying colors like vanity, lights, fixtures, etc.

If you want your bath to look like an old man lives there, like "I was born in this house and I'll die in this house!" you first have to figure out what "kind" of old man you are looking for. You can keep the walls white, then go down to the local bar or pool hall and get all the smokers to spend the day smoking in the bathroom with the window and door closed. After about a month or so, you'll have that nicotine stained fingers look on your walls, ceiling, skylight, vanity and shower.

If you want your bath to look like a silver fox lives there (like Richard Gere) then go with the Cardamom color that Kendra suggested--and also the shower curtain she suggested. I love the vanity you chose, it evokes a warm feeling, like a study in an old mansion in the countryside. Wood tones like oak, cherry and walnut, and the newer tones of pecan and cinnamon BEG for the yellow toned accents and fixtures. Not the shiny brass from the 1980s, or the "antiqued brass" from the 1970s, but the newer golden toned fixtures--Kendra also posted that look in the photo with the darker green walls. But, you have the black and white theme going, and have chosen the silver toned fixtures, which is PERFECT! The mirror you chose is a classic accent for black & white, not so much for a walnut toned vanity. If you absolutely must change the vanity, go with a black painted base and a white sink top. The fixtures you have chosen (light, mirror and faucets) will complement the black & white.

You can also hang a glass shelf (with silver toned brackets) on the wall above the toilet, and store 1920s style men's shaving supplies on it. The white ceramic flowers are feminine, is that the look you want to evoke? The lions are really cool and quite interesting, but I think they go more towards the country manor style. If you are going for the country manor look of an older man in his study, sitting at an antique wooden desk in a burgundy leather chair with nail head trim, you'll have to get rid of the black & white theme.

Go with the cardamom paint color--it has the gray tones that you need to complement the black & white, it will make the silver tones of the fixtures pop, yet it has some warm tones that make it feel soothing, and it helps it make the black & white not so stark. Paint the walls and ceiling in cardamom. When you put the new lights in, do NOT put those new blue led bulbs in, they are very harsh. Go with the warm white bulbs, or find some incandescent bulbs at a thrift store. Oh, and keep the black toilet lid, it gives off a more masculine look-- a white lid gives a softer, feminine look.

My two cents: you mentioned you want it to look like an old man lives there and that you hadn’t thought of it in terms of fashion. What I see with the black and white and chrome finishes is a distinguished man in a tux or in a suit at a formal affair. To me the flower decor does not align with that vision. Maybe more of a “boutonniere” if you want flowers. The paint color is the tie and the towels are the handkerchief or socks … =) One typically would not wear a light beige or light gray tie. Vanity is hair color or shoes. The toilet you have chosen is the crisply starched shirt. Fixtures, the cufflinks.
Walls can be anything you want as long as you tie it all together, but I personally would not pick a pastel or light color but you do "you."

Acacia Haze is the color I have earmarked for my guest bath, retreat is on the same strip and just a bit darker. I think it will be beautiful with your wood.

I made a major mistake. This is the color of the vanity. What I posted was on interior drawer. Any changes in ideas ? I have to read all the comments and I did order acacia haze as sample. I am much more pleased with this color vanity. I have to go back and read the comments. Thanks everyone. Let me know if anyone thinks there should be color changes

That stain colour on the vanity is much nicer than the drawer interior that you showed earlier. Much richer looking. I don't think I would change the recommendations you've received. Dark green or dark brown, black, grey - they would still work very well in your space.

One I remember someone else using in an old house and it looked fantastic was SW Urbane Bronze. I can't find an online picture of it being used in a bathroom but here it is in a couple of pictures. In the first photo, against the white ceiling and door trim - so rich. Great colour.

Someone could likely photoshop a photo for you or you could build a mood board yourself with a picture of the tile, vanity etc and you can switch in different paint colours.

Best bet is to pick up some samples of paint colours that appeal to you and try them in the space. With the skylight bringing in light colours may appear different in your room than you are seeing on a paint chip.

I think you are on the right path and the only way to know if it is going to be the perfect shade is to look at the sample.

When you look at Acacia Haze next to your tile and next to your vanity come back and let us know if you are absolutly ticked pink or if you feel like something is off and need to nudge the color a bit in one direction or another (more yellow, more blue, too gray, not gray enough). This color strip is quite popular and it is popular for a good reason. The blue/green grays on this strip work with most wood tones and homes and are petty flexible.

I think the dark greens will still look good with your darker vanity. Your space is so bright that the green walls are going to look lighter than any sample anyway. If you want something lighter to contrast the dark green then go with more of a khaki.

I used Farrow and Ball mouse's back in my bathroom. It is described as a green based grey brown. I find it handsome and masculine.

Here it is in my 1938 bathroom that has no windows. (And no artwork and is in a constant state of needing something. I'd love to have your vanity in my bathroom. It is a second bathroom though and low on my priority list.)

Looks great! I will be ordering more samples today. I do like how masculine this room looks I do agree with everyone that the flowers and the lions have to go. I do agree also about the color suggestions. It has been hard because the vanity had been covered. But I do like the idea of going darker. I have as I have said a center of the room skylight and I would like it to look masculine and classic. I love these suggestions especially about the style. I was losing sight of my style. I love the idea of the glass and chrome shelf.

I do agree. I have much more light that the bathroom pictured here. I did order acacia haze as a sample and it may be too light for the look I am going for. Retreat is the next dark color on that palette I did like acacia haze but my light will wash it out. I am learning

Everyone has been so great !! I will be getting my samples soon and holding them next to the vanity. The real vanity. And not being afraid of the darker colors. I like the refined chrome look and the suggestions are really helping me to look at this like an outfit. That I do very well

The theme for most rooms in my house is men's suiting.

While not the color you are going for, I love the masculine vibe in these rooms.

These are the look. I am going for. I was afraid the black and white would not coordinate with the look but I will try my best. Love these looks !

I have this great framed photo of the Golden Gate Bridge when it was under construction but I am afraid it would get water damaged. It is in my bedroom and no one really gets to see it. The middle of the bridge is missing. Bought in San Fran

For art, I suggest making sure to keep an earth element (plants, animals, water, fire) to keep it balanced. Artwork, again, should reflect “you” and keep with the vibe of the rest of the house. And the artwork should have life and movement (waterfall, tree, clouds, animals, you get it, although I don’t suggest people in the art because it feels weird to have them in the bathroom with me LOL.) This brings life to the otherwise stiff formal vibe of the “suit.” That’s why the caning works so well in the picture posted just above. It’s a natural element. Choose what speaks to and reflects “you” when in nature. It will lift you up every time you enter the room. For me it’s trees and the sky. Took me years to realize it was my “thing.” What speaks to you in nature? Choose that.

Flowers. And Japanese maples. I have an amazing tiny city garden but I guess the flowers would be too feminine. We have a lot of photography around the house we have used in other rooms. My husband takes pics. I guess I should get him out there one day to take some more. We like animals. In my dining room is a 4 foot square print of a goat head on that chased him. He has been inspired lately and says he wants to take pics of horses. We shall see. We live in a very urban environment. No horses in the neighborhood !

I was very inspired by the decor of Frank & musso’s in Los Angeles when we went in early Nov. seems to have more meaning these days

Ahhh got it. You can still do flowers if they’re done right. I Looked up the restaurant. Arts and crafts, art nouveau, craftsman, art deco style. William Morris’ patterns and artwork are very popular recently. Google him. If his work is too busy for you, look up arts and crafts and craftsman style artwork. (Art nouveau was a little more feminine.)May be what you’re looking for, or at least point you in the right direction for art or accents. Would go well with what you have so far.

No idea why that pic made it in there !! That is my dressing room. I like these little wall shelves from Ballard. Also got an idea of framing sheet music “ duke Ellington’s take the a train “. That was something my husband learned to play when he was performing jazz long again in manhattan. I like that I would have the black and white repeated. On the green walls and I think I chose Sherwin Williams retreat as the wall color. Please ignore the pic above

To me, what is more important that the subject of the artwork is the framing itself. It is a chance to play with more wood and gold to echo your vanity. I'm sure you could find frames with cane like what is in the pics below. I agree - it looks great in those rooms.

Hi Adrianne, glad you posted the actual vanity, that is beautiful and a very rich color. You can definitely make it work in the black & white scheme, especially if you are getting a warmer white floor, but with a few adjustments. Stay with Cardamom paint, or Hidden Trail, they would go well with the wood. The wood cabinet is going to have a warm white background--the tiles, so it will really pop. You could even go with Twig Basket, but don't go towards the green shades. I think Acacia is going to get washed out with your skylight.

The adjustments though... I think changing the faucet to an oiled bronze would bring out the richness of the wood vanity, and give it a little more of the look you are going for. The chrome or even antiqued real silver are refined, and they go with the black & white, but they are going to fight against the wood. Now, is there any way to change the frame of that large mirror to a thick wood frame, maybe the same shade as the vanity? That's the same dilemma, chrome or silver with a large wood feature (cabinet) they're going to fight each other. How about that round mirror with the wood frame that's in the photo with the white ceramic flowers? Try hanging that one instead. Then, of course instead of chrome/silver and glass shelves, black metal shelf brackets and rounded wood shelves, same shade as the vanity. Go with the same oiled bronze shower fixtures, if you are changing them out, and a black or oiled bronze shower curtain rod. I think that might give you that older, refined, masculine look.

You don’t think I should use any green?? That big mirror is four foot round. I would love to use that. Maybe I will go in search of an oval wood mirror I am obsessed with mirrors. I live in a small house and they help

No green... it looks great against wood, but your vanity will be up against a soft white tile wall, not a green painted wall. The green will be fighting against the black & white. Mirrors are great for bouncing light around to little places that need it. :-)
