The Impossible Room
Comments (3)We had a loft bed with desk below it for our younger son, but by the time he was about 10, he got very tired of having to climb in and out of bed all the time, the bed was horrible to make, and as he got tall enough he felt like he was almost hitting the ceiling as he climbed in (we only have 8 ft ceilings in our home). A futon style bed is okay for short term, but not supportive and not great for long term use. A drawing to scale would help a lot, as was mentioned. Could you pull out the window seat and put the head of the bed where the window seat was? What about a murphy bed?...See MorePlease help! Impossible living room (with brick archways)
Comments (12)I'm intrigued! I'd want to focus on looking outward, through the arches, the atrium and to the landscape beyond. Is there enough wall space on the brick walls between the arches for your pull- down movie screen? Could you position your seating to take advantage of both the outdoor view and the screen? The contrast of the ceiling distracts from your brick because of the competing pattern of the arrangement of the beams. Is it in the budget to paint the ceiling a less contrasting color? I know it may seem like it would darken the room, but a softer neutral, but not dark, will help the room feel less cavernous. At first I was going to suggest painting the beams to match the ceiling, but when I look at your stairs and woodwork, then there may not be a clear "division" for doing so. I can't tell. I'd love to see photos of your atrium. I'd want to make it inviting and comfortable. Greenery, seating, softness, etc. Is there a history or an architect attributed to this house? Is that white floor tile original or added? The wood floor color makes it look like replacement, too. You'll want lots of lamps! What are the dimensions of the wood floor area? Was it originally a combined dining and living? I see so many things that could be done, depending on your needs/wants and budget. Don't rush it....See MorePlease help with furniture layout in this impossible room
Comments (40)Kristine, have you considered using an articulating wall mount for the flat screen TV? DH loves his TV. I love the flexibility. It changes the situation from the TV being in charge to you being in charge. You position the TV to where you wish to sit and view. It is a given that DH will have this TV in this room. It would be a shame to design your wonderful and useful space around an appliance. Enjoy your fireplace and celebrate your high ceiling and lovely windows. Work around them, maybe you don't need to fill the space as much as you think. The space is the beauty of this room. Keep the couch and don't have so many lamps and chairs cluttering this space. I also think that a spectacular rug would anchor the picture. The 7 Best TV Wall Mounts of 2021: Secure Your Flat Screen in Style! Comments (23)I've got one these right now. It's a beautiful space, but temperature regulation is an issue. Watching TV is an issue, too. The sound is lost in the room and we have to turn the volume up quite a bit to hear. As a retired appraiser, it makes more financial sense to floor the second story portion. While not a wow factor choice, it increases your useable square footage and will result in a corresponding increase in valuation. The point is, there are a lot more factors involved and unintended results of the decision to go with a 2-story high space....See MoreRelated Professionals
