Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 1/8
Comments (21)This past week I have refocused on my health goals and am getting back into my regular exercise and eating routine. I am still up a few pounds from the holidays and I'd like to work on that. I have been swimming, running, biking, and lifting weights. My sinuses are finally better so that's helping too. I am struggling a bit with energy levels when I'm exercising, though I'm not certain exactly why. On the eating front I'm trying to be more mindful about real hunger vs boredom/mouth hunger. I am continuing IF, cycled in a 36hr fast this week. One thing I notice is that my skin looks amazing after a fast. Some of my reasoning for doing fasting is the autophagy/healing component (beyond caloric intake reduction) so it's kind of nice to see something come of that (at least in my eyes even if no one else can see it). Also in the summer I kept myself quite busy with yard work and projects and I've been feeling a little bored so I'm tackling some indoor projects like tediously steam cleaning every single grout joint in the miles of tile in my house. It's not really exercise, but it's still activity and I think it's good for me to keep occupied and feeling like I'm accomplishing things outside of my career. On the sheet pan front, I do sheet pan veggies all the time and sometimes full sheet pan meals. For super simple, I chop up veggies (commonly brussel sprouts, cauliflower, red onion, broccoli, sometimes delicata squash or sweet potato, bell peppers, green beans) and toss with olive oil and salt and pepper and roast for around 20 minutes at 400-415. I frequently do sheet pan Tandoori tofu and vegetables from this website, but it looks like they have a whole page of 25 sheet pan meals. Thought others might enjoy some of these too. https://www.feastingathome.com/10-sheet-pan-dinners-to-make-life-simple/ I recently ordered some dried guajillo chiles online because I really want to make this pinto posole and I couldn't find them at my local grocery store. Lately I've really been feeling soups and brothy recipe for warmth in the chilly winter. I haven't made this yet, but I'm looking forward to making it in the near future. https://cookieandkate.com/pinto-posole-recipe/ @nicole___ I'm very jealous of a clear running trail. That sounds lovely! My husband doesn't like to run with me, but when we take walks together we share a single pair of earbuds too. I love it. @Funkyart you're so thoughtful in taking care of your nephew. What a wonderful aunt. @RNmomof2 zone 5 skiing is such great exercise! That's wonderful to have done a ski trip. I'm impressed that you've been able to shed the few holiday pounds already. Well done! @Sueb20 and @gsciencechick great job keeping up with the exercise! I think it' so great for our health to keep ourselves moving. Strength, flexibility, cardio vascular health. All of it! I'm really impressed with how well everyone is taking care of themselves individually. Love feeling motivated by this group. Thanks!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/5/2023
Comments (33)Sue, any time I get called back for an ultrasound following a mammogram it’s unnerving. I’m sure they told you it’s pretty common but also know that doesn’t help your state of mind. I’ll be thinking about you this week. I’m trying to pick up the pace of my walks because a newer study says the cadence of one’s stride as well as the number of steps taken each day are positively correllated with better cardiovascular health and lower mortality. Continuing to eat healthfully and mindfully… my evening snack is now either a yoghurt or six almonds and six dried tart cherries. I went shopping with my mother yesterday and bought a sweater in a size small and was so pleased until I remembered I recently bought a down coat in size XL from Uniqlo to allow a heavy sweater underneath. Sizing really is ALL over the place! (Funky, i bought this coat because it’s more flat than puffy and one of the reviewers said it was the only coat she tried on that didn’t make her feel like she was wearing a duvet 😁 And I finally figured out why I don’t like down coats with the quilting baffles on the diagonal—- it looks like the underside of a turtle! ) Sorry for the aside!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 1/21/2024
Comments (20)@funkyart - I'm sorry you are hurting. Maybe the walk will help? Stretch it out and warm up the muscles? If it persists maybe PT? I am such a fan. They helped me with a shoulder injury almost immediately and told me the stretches to do at home that worked. @Rnmom - thanks for the Noatmeal reminder! My health coach told me about that way back when I started this, but I had forgotten all about it. And as Sueb suggested - I did add some protein powder to my oatmeal one morning. That was perfect for my glucose monitor and my day! It just works for me if I do a high protein breakfast. Sets my day up perfectly. My blood sugar levels were better the whole day. I didn't LOVE the taste of it, but I think I can experiment with that and the Noatmeal and find a good breakfast alternative. For me, it really is key for the whole day. I haven't bought into the whole protein powder thing, but since I can't really do a lot of eggs and I don't like yogurt, it is probably a good alternative for me. I also tracked my weight this week and I'm not really status quo like I've been telling myself. When looking back over the last year, I am steadily up about 5 pounds and trending in the wrong direction. I think it's a combination, diet of course, but I am not moving. It's so nice in the warmer months when I can play pickleball for hours. Now, I'm lucky to walk 1/2 hour a day. I might need to seek outside accountability of a gym or class to really get back into it. I haven't sweat in months and that isn't good. And it doesn't feel good. I haven't read the MOVE book yet, but I can say from first hand experience how important it is to stable blood sugar. I can walk for 10-15 minutes or fast for a couple hours to get my numbers back down. And they're just not stable if I don't move. It's really quite amazing the difference it makes....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 5/5/2024
Comments (12)Glad to have you join us, 3Katz! I think you have a great plan-- just replacing simple carbs with more veggies is such a positive step! Also clearing the house of the junky snacks. I still enjoy the junky snacks but I have to keep them out of the house! GS glad that you are able to get a dose but I echo Feathers, it is great that you have been able to maintain without it! And speaking of holding steady -- great work, Feathers! I think one of the hardest things for me lately is keeping to a routine and holding steady. You are inspiring and I love hearing that you are feeling stronger! Also love hearing that you are sleeping better. This past week my sleep has taken a steep decline and I feel it. I am waking up multiple times in the night-- not for the bathroom or any known reason. Just waking up. I may check out the magnesium glycinate. I read somewhere years ago that most people dont get enough magnesium -- since it has so many health benefits, I started adding walnuts (a great source of magnesium) to a lot of my meals (salad, pasta, etc) .. i may try adjusting my diet first. Green leafy vegetables, nuts and black beans are all good sources that I remember off the top of my head. Speaking of black beans, I have been enjoying a chicken taco salad this week-- with seasoned ground chicken, black beans, campari tomatoes, shallots. It is quick and easy and pretty satisfying. I have had a hard time getting into salads ever since I got very sick after eating a salad a year ago. I think any variation that isnt the typical cucumber, tomato, onion in vinaigrette is the key. It is crazy it is still turning me off a year later-- but I am glad to find other variations of salad that I can enjoy. I haven't lost any weight but I have been better about increasing my protein. When I do increase protein though, I dont eat as many vegetables. I need to get a better balance. I know protein is so important but I feel better when I eat more veggies than protein. Hope everyone has a great weekend!...See MoreRelated Professionals
