which dining chairs to pick for new dining room table

We can finally afford a new dining room set.
This is the current space with the 3rd image showing the current dining room set.

The current dining room set was a hand me down and never really
matched the rest of the furniture which is more modern.
The table we are considering is this custom made table shown in the 4th image. my question is what type of chair to pair this with. My partner likes the chair in the 5th image while i prefer something more modern as in the 6th image. what is the better option considering the rest of the decor. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Congrats on redesigning your dining room; it's such an important part of the home!

White is challenging to keep pristine, and the room could benefit from a spruce up of personality and vibrancy. I wouldn’t choose either of the options you’re considering for this space. A black or a light green would add depth or a splash of color. Here are a few options or inspos:

I agree that a light uphostery would be problematic. I loved the scuptural black velvet chair in Carole’s sencond link, but thought the back was a bit low and the arms too high to fit under the table. Here’s an option to consider, though you’d need to take note of the measurements too see how well it fits with the table.

Thank you southernheart! It's always nice to know that I am on the right track. I am planning on selling my leather couch and get a couch in a chenille type of material in a more traditional style. I will miss the leather couch, it is so practical, but it is really too big for the space that I have, and the direction that I want to go in, so there will be lots of changes coming up.

firsthouse...I don't know. They come up pretty regularly...but not so regularly that I'd guarantee that they'd match. Have you hit the thrift shops/resale shops/goodwill in your area? That's where I found mine...and NC was NOT a bastion for MCM design. Lots of stuff made here...not much SOLD here. If you are in the SF area there should be lots of thrift stores with DM style chairs. Here are mine...recovered: From kitchen table to refinish Mine aren't anything special...not a known designer or brand...but they WERE cheap. $225 for all six. Of course...they had so many staples in them I ended up paying to have them re-upholstered instead of doing it myself...at $90/chair...but it was worth it. If you want to search on ebay...try running two searches. One as "mid-century modern dining chair" and one as "Danish Modern dining chair." And don't forget Craigslist.

Hi, I was seconding the aluminum chair when my 'puter froze up...didn't post. I think it's just edgy enuf but not tooo extreme. I saw metal chairs like this paired with a primitive country table and it looked terrific...in some mag. Their simple lines wouldn't compete but would complement your counter stools as well. And these types of chairs can work in vintage settings as well as contemp.

That's a really nice table--I love rustic woods! You sound like you have a lot of stained wood in the room, perhaps you'd consider painted wood chairs? So the consensus so far is that a modern chair is the better choice. Forgot to mention that if we choose a chair with wooden parts they would match the stain of the table. Also, the dining room is used less than 30% of the time as the owner of space eats on the kitchen island when by himself. Therefore cream coloured upholstery would be manageable. I do like the sage green upholstery suggestion. It pulls out that color from the large painting. Thx for the input!
