Question about roof extension for patio cover
Comments (3)Jim - designing the beam and column and footing sizes is simply a matter of calculations that can be provided by an architect or structural engineer, but before they can help you out, the design really needs to be drawn out on paper so they can see what loads will be supported and where. Your existing house has a pretty complex roof design, so if you want the addition to be attractive and functional, you really need to work with a local residential architect to draw it up for you and work everything out on paper before you hire a contractor to start building. We've had several clients come to us over the years to 'fix' their project when they thought it was simple enough just to build without designing it first and then get half way through and discover it just wouldn't work like they thought. You will find the designer's fee is far less than what it will cost to try to wing-it in the field, or to deal with roof leaks later because of pitch problems that could have been alleviated if designed properly. This also gives you the chance to make sure the addition is attractive and functional on paper before spending the big bucks on construction. By the way, just from looking at the photographs, I don't think you have the hip lines drawn correctly on the 'Existing Roofline' drawing - looks like the side roof pitches and back roof pitches are the same which would make the hip lines 45 degree angles. Best of luck, Dale...See MoreGarage Floor Seams: To Cover, Or Not To Cover ? That's the question.

Comments (14)So if you want one to look like a piece of furniture- you will ruin the look of it with a water and ice maker on the outside. I say either commit fully to the look or just buy a nice stainless fridge. I personally love the look of the integrated appliances, and the three that do it best are Thermador, Sub Zero and Miele. I am currently doing one in my new kitchen with Sub Zero- a 48". Be prepared that the average cost to integrate it will be 4-10K extra in cabinetry. But this is a form over function thing- and the entire purpose of this is to have it look like furniture over the functionality of a fridge. Mine is going to look similar to the first photo- but I will eventually love to have a kitchen with something similar to the second one!...See MoreWindow Covering question
Comments (1)If you have wall space on either side you could do panel drapes or just a simple grommet drape with a nice rod that would cover all the windows and door at night, i don't think the day time is a problem with the porch there....See MoreRelated Professionals
