Help me work up my nerve… Countertop Poll

last month

I’m remodeling my kitchen and the stone is planned to be the star — using it on the counters but also taking it up the wall behind the range to the ceiling. I included a snapshot of the layout so you can get an idea. I plan to have a walnut island and vent hood with painted cabinets (likely a warm gray), but these finish options can be tweaked around the stone I select. Floors are light oak.

I’ve done pretty extensive slab shopping in my area and I’ve narrowed it down to two very different favorites:

  • a lovely Matarazzo Dolomite with creams and grays
  • a statement Calacutta Viola Quartz

I want something with cool and warm tones intertwined, and lots of movement. Both of these options check those boxes, albeit to very different degrees.

I really LOVE the Viola, both for its bold design and the fact that I wont have to worry as much about staining given that it is Quartz. I really want to have the guts to choose it. But I worry that so much of it will overwhelm in the space, or that I’ll tire of it in 5 years. Is it too much? Is it too trendy? Still, I keep seeing inspiration photos that use a ton of this material and I’m drawn to it…

I love the Matarazzo too, and it would go with my house which is very light and neutral overall… it feels like the safe choice. I also wonder if it’s not “enough” given the fact that it would be my main design feature. And, I don’t want to be worried about staining it, given the material and that it’s much lighter overall.

Ok - talk me in or out of it one or the other, please! Sometimes you just need a strong outside opinion to help you solidify your own. :)

Life is short, use the Viola!
Use the Matarazzo, it’s timeless!
