Growth in my compost bin
Comments (6)Most times I check my centers are 140-160(F) when i'm actively composting but there are plenty of times when I don't get it the attention it deserves and it'll remain cool for a while or some section of it wont ever get it's turn in the center of the pile. As such, I totally avoid tomatoes and remain diligent to keep cucurbit seeds (melon, squash, cucumber) out of the kitchen scraps. During melon season it drives the wifey nuts to extract those seeds before tossing in the rinds and whatnot but I've recently shown her how to roast the various seeds to eat and it's not so bad. Cantaloupe, honeydew and pumpkin seeds all taste similar and can be soaked in sea-salt water and roasted as such. Watermelon seeds taste best when roasted the "chinese" way of soaking them in a batch of anise seed and salt water and then..in an old pot. Heating up a pot full of sand and stirring the seeds into the hot-hot sand and letting the pot cool outdoors. Can't seem to find a recipe online to safe my life though......See MorePics of my new compost bins, garden and compost tumbler
Comments (13)dalton thanks for the pics. I have been talking to my husband about making a bin. When I saw your pallets I knew that was the bin for me. Maybe because I can get the pallets free and it does not look hard to do. Swanz that is a very nice bin my hats off to you. I tried to do that once and my daughter just laughed at the finished product and my family threw it out. Oh well so much for building things....See MoreMy new compost bin
Comments (2)Ah, to live in the 'tropics' of zone 6 and being able to do outside fun this late in the season. (she says, enviously) Sounds like fun AND functional, brandond. I, too, hope there are pics. Kris...See MoreBlack Gold....aka my compost bin
Comments (4)My compost pile consists of just that... a pile! I never turn, mix, or water it... I let Mother Nature do her own thing. Yes, it takes longer to be able to pull black gold out from underneath it, but I don't mind waiting. The only thing I really did to contain my piles is make a ring of cheap wire fencing to surround it. Within 2 years, I can dig some decent loamy soil from the bottom! I've wanted a barrel composter, but they cost too much for me to justify buying one. Very good, Kristi! Isn't homemade compost awesome?! Larry has spent many years hunting and trapping, and he says that if you urinate around the edge of your yard, most deer and other larger animals won't bother your yard and garden... it doesn't always work... it depends on the animals and how used to humans they are. He says female human urine would probably work better because it has a stronger odor. Other than that, not much works... there are lots of wives tales, but not many are really effective. Possums don't really bother gardens much, but deer, coons and skunks will want to eat!...See MoreRelated Professionals
