Comments (6)teapotmissy - Your kitchen is already beautiful. Are your floors going to be wood or something else? I love the look of wood in a kitchen, especially a white kitchen, it really warms up the look. I can see why you want to have the marble on the perimeter - it would really work well and compliment the back splash you have chosen. And a wood topped white island would be striking. That said the reverse would be lovely too - there is not much nicer than a huge expanse of marble in my book. The wood perimeter would "ground" the white cabinets, but might not be as complimentary to the backsplash. But you can put a sample to it and judge - the colors look like the could look nice with wood - just not give you that light feeling the marble and iridescent glass would. I don't think there is a mistake to made in the two options you have, just what is your preference. If you are putting in a wood floor, I think that will add warmth as well. Jutting out just a few feet looks like an after-thought. And, yes, it's terrible placement for the fridge anyway so just keep it a pantry. You need to either eliminate it or do something that looks intentional. You can make it a nice, long, reach-in pantry that is easy to organize and access, and the living room side could be where you hang art or have shelving for display. Or you can make the bottom cabinets a lower pantry and then have cabinetry on the top that is glass doors on both the kitchen and living room side with pretties in it so you can see through but the kitchen is somewhat obscured by the pretties. Or a lower pantry with open shelves (no glass) but then you do more dusting. Or just have a lower pantry and a counter top for buffet service. There are a number of ways you can make it look intentional and a design feature instead of a block jutting into the room. If you decide on just a lower pantry, then they should be drawers. ETA: Oh, MG's plan works for the range as a focal point. I sorta forgot that was a goal. However, you still need to do something with that pantry to make it look better than just a block....See MoreNeed advice on a kitchen remodel for a fairly new house
Comments (58)I am an angle island owner with the identical layout to the OP's inspiration. My only difference was that the sink was on the island. It makes the whole kitchen into a one person space. NO ONE else can be in the space behind the island. Every time the fridge door was opened, it blocks the entire kitchen. The pantry usage did the same. The corner area was unusable and a junk pile. No one ever stood at or sat at the island or cared that we had an ocean view from one side. The angle made it feel in your face for people. The angle made the counter useless. No one ever sat at or stood at the island because they disliked the angle. Unless the island was much larger, it felt in your face for people. In person the design looks nice but it was horrific in terms of functionality. We effectively had 6"-12" of counter space that we spent 18 yrs prepping on. That's less than one foot. So what's right and comfortable for working in your kitchen. Your visitors couldn't care less about the view. It's typically 10 seconds of standing at door ooh ahh then forgotten....See MoreCenter-Hall Colonial in Northern NJ Kitchen Remodel Layout Advice
Comments (23)Your home is gorgeous! I spent a year renovating a 1939 petite colonial (1700 sf). In my case, I had to add a kitchen as the old one was tiny had badly renovated in the 1990s. A few workflow tips in your newer post with the kitchen. I'd put the prep sink at the range end of your island, instead of at the dining room entrance end. Think about it -- you chop, then have to carry the food to the range. Please rethink that desk in your kitchen. I've had "work/message centers" as built-ins in previous homes, but here in my new old house, I'm using a piece of furniture -- a drop-front secretary where I can close up the mess when guests arrive, but sit there and work (printer in the bottom). You can put the secretary in any room. Where your desk is located, it's not a drop station for bringing in the mail, schoolbooks, etc. For aesthetics, please try to make the kitchen fit the spirit of the house. White cabinets would likely fit it better than stained wood. Consider having at least a few glass-front upper cabinets. If you turned that desk space into storage, you wouldn't need to line the walls with upper cabinets. It's amazing what you can fit into a "hutch" look that would fit the aesthetics of your home. I had hutches flanking my farmsink in my previous home. One for pantry items, the other for dishes. My current 1939 home new renovation -- hutches -- the one of the left of my paneled fridge is for dishes and the one one the right side is filled with food items stored in canisters and containers. My kitchen is only 12x12 as the dimensions are in keeping with the original room sizes. The dining room is 12x12 and the living room is 12 x 21....See MoreRelated Professionals
