I have the same problem in my KA ref, just like yours. KA will not do anything about it. I had them out 3 times prior to the end of warranty and the problem was never fixed. It occurred again after the warranty was out. You guessed it. It's now my problem.The problem with mine, I figured out, is the pressure from the water filter is not great enough when the filter gets old. The fill tube (black tube in freezer) freezes up. I have taken the filter cartridge out and for the last year have had no problem. Our municipal water is very good where I live so I am not worried about quality issues. I would use a better inline filter on my water line if I were concerned. On my first service call, the tech did say that KA had repaired "hundreds" of these units like this. Unfortunately the "like this" that he did to my unit did not work. I am planning a buildout on my garden level that will include a snack bar which will have a ref. That unit will not be a KA.

FWIW....I have two refs/freezers with ice makers connected to RO supply. The ice they make doesn't smell. It's partly-cloudy due to trapped air but otherwise it's quite pristine. I also carefully wrap whatever food items are stored in there. If I put an unwrapped onion or other odiferous item in the freezer thereby allowing the water and ice to absorb that odor, the character of the ice would change....of course. If unused, the stored ice does, indeed, get "stale" and sublimated after a couple of weeks. "Cloudy" ice is typically caused by trapped air. Many (most?) dedicated under-counter machines are designed to avoid that, thereby producing clear ice. However, if they get smelly water, they will certainly produce smelly ice. Quality water in the isolation provided by a dedicated machine certainly will produce quality ice. The ice they produce is also constantly melting away and draining so that what remains is in the bin is constantly fresh. If you can endure the noise and afford the expense, they will, indeed, provide superior ice. I'm being referenced without my knowledge.... Yes all ice machines need to drain melted ice. If it goes by gravity then you must have a p trap, which can be difficult if the drain outlet on your machine is only 6 inches from the floor. If this is not an option then you are stuck with a pump. Some nicer units will have a sealed pump system. In this case, if the pump fails, it will send a signal to shut off the icemaker which would prevent overflow of waste water. Less nice systems basically sell you a "condensate pump" that is a box that you drain water into, then when it gets full it pumps it out, into a drain stack like your dishwasher drains into. If these fail, there is no way to keep your ice machine from trickling waste water into and then flooding out of them. My Hoshizaki drain pump is virtually silent, but this may not be the case with all of them. BUT if you are going to tolerate the noise of an ice machine, then a drain pump is no big deal. If doing new construction, then definitely plumb in a gravity drain to save the hassle and risk.

How to fix the ice maker. First you will need to remove the thing. Take all the bins and shelves out. Lie on your back and look up at the ice maker. You will see two clips that hold it in place. Press them in with two butter knives on each side and when you have them pressed in have another person pull out the ice maker. Check to see if your bin is broken (like mine). Call Liebherr and get the repair kit (about 99 bucks). Take a small screwdriver and remove the front nameplate (it clips in). Remove the screw. There is another screw on the side. Replace the parts needed. Here is where it gets interesting... Reinstall and turn off the ice maker by holding down the power button for about 2 seconds. Then press the power button for 5-8 seconds (but no more than 10) and the ice maker will do a "test run". Then press the power button again and after 2 seconds it will start flashing. Count how many times it flashes. It will be between 1-8 total. This is the water "fill time". The more flashes the more water it pumps into the tray during the fill. What breaks these trays is that they are overfilled with too much water and then they crack. When it stops flashing push the bin back in and pull it back out. It will increment one level (5 to a 6) and flash again. Reset it back to a 1 (three is default). Check tomorrow and if the ice is WAY too small - start again and bump it up a level. Water pressure might be overfilling your tray and causing the damage and now you know how to "hack" it back to normal operation. Personally we keep it on a 1 and just live with the smaller cubes. Also make sure your water is SOFT. If it is too hard the minerals will build up on the tray and cause the ice to not release. I miss the days with my Jenn-Air when I could order the ENTIRE ice maker for $35 and swap it out with one hand and no tools! Hope this helps!
