Help! Exterior paint, trying for mid-century modern
Comments (12)Thank you! That is a great idea about the grey - I think minimizing the white would really help. The landscaping idea is also very clever. I was playing with the house facade last night, and was trying to figure out if anything else could be done with the entry area to brighten it up with an accent color. Now I see your comments about perhaps not doing an accent color may be better. The original house at the back was built in the 1960s and has beautiful wood vaulted ceilings, so the interior has a lot of potential. A very 90s addition was put on the front of the house, with these semi-circle windows and tile roof - so we are trying our best to tie these varying styles together. I appreciate your help! I will check out the links you provided, thank you, Shannon...See Moremid century exterior design
Comments (18)I'm in z5 (IN) and I definitely don't recommend the ground cover euonymus. It is hardy here where it turns a quite attractive dark burnt red color in winter, but the birds seed it all over and it becomes a nuisance! I suspect that water may be an issue as the plantings between walk & house appear to be almost under the eaves. I've had good luck with epimedium as evergreen gc in dry shade. Also hellebores, which I think have a structural look which would go well with your house, though they do take awhile to get established. The really big hosta are also very structural. The chartreuse Sum & Substance or one of the huge dark blue ones would be my choice, depending on if in shade or more sun. Both want plenty of water....See MoreHELP--ugly vinyl exterior on mid-century ranch
Comments (10)I have a 1956 MCM ranch and I would never put vinyl siding on it.I think I would be curious to know what is under it for sure .They often mixed the brick with siding . I have pebble dash stucco and siding on mine I so wish I had brick insted but we have learned to love the pebble dash it is a bit of history where we live in B.C. Another thought to keep in mind down the road is some really cool MCM landscaping . This idea is one of my favorites. We are still working on the inside so will tackle the landscaping next....See MoreNeed help with mid century ranch exterior entrance and more
Comments (15)Maybe a bigger project that you envision, but I would replace the porch surface with brick, add a broad, deep step off the porch and an equally wide brick walk to the street. Take out the odd little brick bed next to the house and use those bricks for the step, if nothing else. You could also remove all the brick bed areas and use them on the porch.Or you could replace the brick with concrete and face it with your own bricks sawn into 3 pieces to use as facing bricks. Pick up on that orange brick near the step to paint the front doors ochre or sienna. I would paint all the trim, porch siding, column and garage in back with a soft white like those two bricks just below the left corner of the front window. Replace or move your house numbers to the column or to the brick wall opposite it. Other than the azaleas, which I always love, I would replace any non-blooming plants with more azaleas or with low growing evergreen shrubbery that will stay below the windows without you having to maintain it....See MoreRelated Professionals
