Anyone able to tell me about my couch and lamp?
Comments (10)Sofa plus matching chair from that era doesn't show up that often. Except that I have a set from my MIL just now that I'm working on finding a home for, I really don't see sets too often. Couches alone, yes. In sagging condition, I agree with redhead on the sofa price, maybe add half again for the chair. But it depends on how fast you want to get rid of it - cheap enough, anything sells fast (try the free listings if you don't believe me). If not in a hurry, try a little higher, maybe $550, and you could put an OBO on it. But you may in the end get much less. As for stubbing toes, yes, what is it about these antiques that causes that? I do it on my other old couch too. For some reason they made the legs protrude a little. It does reduce the charm!! KarinL...See MoreCan anyone tell me about my c. 1852 farm house?
Comments (3)It's fairly typical for homes in Virginia from that period. Stylistically, it's a two-story central hall plan vernacular farmhouse. It's not one of the fancy named styles, but then again, most older houses are vernacular, that is, not slavish renditions of a formal style. There have been some changes over time with your house; I am guessing the chamfered porch posts date from somewhat later. I can't see much more from the photo, but the central passage plan is common to that era and area. Sometimes it is erroneously called an "I House," but central hall is correct. It's a very attractive home and we'd love to see more photos, including any interior details....See MoreCan anyone tell me about my asian pottery?
Comments (12)My3dogs, thanks for the link. I did a google image search on famille jardinere and lots of the pictured somewhat resembled the style of my pot. None were the same shape though, so I'm likely wrong calling it a jardinere. I'm going to use "famille" as a starting point for my searches; thanks for that info. Bronwynsmom, I hadn't even thought about it being an attempt at forgery, but now that you mention it, I know I've heard discussion of that on Antiques Roadshow and other places. I've just never had any idea if it was just cheap tourist crap or something of quality. I live just outside of DC, so I ought to be able to find an antique store that specializes in Asian antiques. Maybe someone would be willing to take a look and give me their thoughts. oakleyoak, I just tried to get a better picture of the mark on the bottom. It's pretty faint and just composed of asian symbols. I appreciate you looking in your book for me. So far, not a peep from the antiques forum....See MoreCan anyone tell me anything about this gorgeous little beauty?
Comments (6)Oh wow! That's an awesome piece. A fantastic curbside find. I agree with the advice to clean it not refinish it and definitely don't sand it. Really amazing all the hardware is intact, that's wonderful. Not sure where you are, but about once every two months, I see mirrors that would go with that piece at my local Habitat ReStore. Sometimes at thrift stores too. You can also try local antique markets, the kind that has a lot of vendors in "stalls" under one roof. They might have a stray mirror that would work. Maybe consignment stores but usually they don't take pieces with no mates but you could put them on alert to let you now if someone shows up with just a mirror that would go with it. Be patient, a mirror will find its way to you one day....See MoreRelated Professionals
