Brick vs Hardi?
Comments (6)We are having the same question in our re-build (due to a fire). Our original house had a brick front and vinyl siding on the sides and back. We were interested in upgrading to brick all around, but the incremental cost (approx. $50K) is making it prohibitive. We will probably go with brick on the front again with Hardi on the backs and sides. We will also use the space for some additional insulation behind the Hardi (rigid foam board)....See MorePlease Help With Brick Maintenance/Cleaning Questions
Comments (13)mydreamhome - Your new home is gorgeous! I found this thread while searching Google for Spalding Tudor fireplaces. We built out home 5 years ago and used the same brick mixed with stucco. We are getting ready to add an outdoor room and are trying to decide between using our brick, or using Faux stone. I am not a fan of cultured stone, and real is too costly according to the contractor, but I have my doubts. Anyway, when we chose our brick, we also saw it on another home. We had no idea that it had a sand finish. Never gave it a thought until we noticed that the finish was coming off in places. Wanted to tell you to watch out for water from your sprinkler system. We had a couple that sprayed the front of the house when it was on. Luckily, the foundation plants have since covered the damage. I am now a little hesitant about using the brick for our fireplace, as I had forgotten about the sand finish. graya - I priced the brick today. It is around $360 per 1000, or $156 per cube of 480. I have no idea how many it's going to take to make our fireplace and a grill enclosure. Here are a couple of pics of our home, and also a mock up of what we want to do in the backyard. Keep in mind that these are old photos and the landscaping was new and young. The photo I used for the mock-up, too! Finish will also rub off on steps Mock-up using brick...See MoreBrick wall vs. brick fireplace
Comments (30)Tuesday, you are so awesome to help me! So, based on the idea that it's the color of my brick that is the problem, I looked up images online of dark mortar, and when I was out driving, looked for homes. I could find pretty much NO pics/IRL homes with dark mortar. Would you say that, esp. since yours is outdoor, it WILL fade, whereas mine being indoors (in a dark room), will just stay as-is? Anyway, I have yet to see a pic of dark mortar that I like. The room is narrow, so I think the enormity of the FP combined with the unattractive B/M is a problem. I am not sure what my options are, though, given that I want to maintain it as a working FP and that my budget is teeny! (Many DIY projects are done w/non-working FPs). I am thinking drywall or stucco would be the best options. Dunno....See Morebrick pavers vs regular pavers?
Comments (11)Boy, it is hard to know what this stuff looks like until it is installed. Keeping with the rest of the house design is the most important. Brick and pavers will both last and have the same maintenance priorities but if they don't match the house it doesn't matter. I found this app at www.specifixapp.com that can help solve this problem. It is for retailers but you can download for 30 days no matter who you are if you complete the form. I did the side by side comparison while standing in my driveway with this app. I noticed they had examples of driveways too on their gallery page. Good luck!...See MoreRelated Professionals
