Although we don't use it much for actual breakfast nooking, our design left us with an 8 x 6 deadend that butts up to the side of the refrigerator. In it we have an antique table with two wings that folds down to 1.25 feet deep, renovated pendant lighting fixture, antique chairs, and a fabulous wall for a single piece of art. On the short wall alongside it we will be putting a 5 foot wide bookshelf, which will be mostly used for books but it also will house a few display pieces. When we have parties, we shorten up the light chain so people can walk under it. We open out the table and tuck the chairs around the back. It makes a fabulous hors d'oeuvres station or a drinks station and it keeps people away from the cooking area just when I need to be left alone. The art wall can be seen from a long distance--we planned it to be our "ta-dah!" spot and it's a funky counterpoint to the rest of the room. Currently, the table has a number of amarylis plants on it. In season we put other current flowers and, again, it allows me to have these things in the room but yet not in the room, the best of both when I'm busy in kitchen. In addition, the bookshelf houses my big collection of cookbooks. I can pull them out and lay them out on the table without intruding on the action in the kitchen itself. I sit there, researching, and the pile of disregarded books is later stacked up ready for reshelving without getting flour on them. I only take one into the actual cooking area. We have run a number of heating ducts through cabinetry at the bottom of a wall. The bookshelf will have one running through it. We just extend the tin channel out to the outside of the cabinet. We've been using oak grates on the ones in our oak kitchen.

What would you do with heavily plastered walls and ceilings?

We haven't yet moved in, master bedroom and bathroom are not yet done. But we stay here quite a bit during the day and brought in some random furniture from the main house. Thank you for the suggestions, I see that grey's don't work in this place and I am not at all offended by suggestions. I went with some of them to paint this place after all.

Need to know window size. Also does that door on the adjacent wall open to the right or left? It will impede what you put there. Do you need more storage? You could install lower cabinets, but not sure I’d use base cabinets given the limited depth you have to the door. You could install uppers as base cabinets to give yourself some storage and then have a bar/coffee station along that wall. Or you could do a breakfast nook in the corner where the long wall meets the 75” wall with banquette and round table. Most importantly think about what you need - more storage, eating space, desk, etc.

Grace, thanks for the pics - very helpful! I would definitely add a smallish corner unit under the TV. It will be a different look than a console under TV but will still ’ground’ the TV & make TV placement look more planned / intentional instead of just the only place to hang it. To figure out what size to look for, either tape out floor space or cut a piece of cardboard for a mock up. It’s hard to determine from picture how much space there is between end of foot chaise at end of sofa & the walls to front & side. Another suggestion for your space - pull the rug to right side of couch to at least line up with that end. I see extra on the other side by radiator & pulling it over to the emptier side will make rug look not skimpy or too small for sofa. It looks like you have room to add a very small drinks table to make that nice rocker & lamp set up very cozy to sit in. Your home looks like it’s a great older house with to die for wood trim & floors. Love that the trim / molding isn’t painted! Also love that your pup matches your sofa so well!

Let all your beautiful wood have it's day. I would repaint a warm white the faux brown walls and call it good.

Are you asking about the wall in the staircase that then goes above the glass paneled door? This wall needs to connect and look good with both the living room and the upstairs hallway. What will the hallway look like? There is an odd column to the right of the glass door and then we see a bit of brown wall to the right of that - are these both getting a green shade too?

Thanks all -- we are doing the William Morris paper in the adjacent dining room, and then choosing some coordinating shades of green for the walls in the living room that extend all the way to the right of that glass door. The question is where to "break". I see what you mean, Kendrah, about having to think through the hallway upstairs. I wonder about a cream color that would pair well with the adjacent green when you see it downstairs? Maybe that works for the ceiling of the living room/dining room as well? I"m not a fan of white next to the woodwork - I just find it to jarring......

You can probably stop paint or wallpaper at the corner at the top of the stairs. At one time a house like this would have been primarily papered with more or less coordinating paper, even on the ceilings--they made plain papers. (which usually still had a subtle pattern) for ceilings. I don't know what Morris pattern you are using in the dining room, but a paper like Morris Standen (a smaller scale of Willow) would frequently have been used as a "plain" adjacent to a more exuberant pattern like Strawberry Thief.

They didn't really have the same rules about how adjacent rooms related to each other and the general lack of pattern that we have now, so you don't necessarily need to strictly adhere to them in your house.

I like the idea of finding a cream for the ceilings in living room and dining room that you then carry up the stairwall. Potentially is could go in the upstairs hallway and ceilings. It would be a nice thread that carries throughout.
