Friday the 13th

I did a search for why people consider Friday the 13th to be unlucky and there were a number of different responses. Whether or not you are superstitious, I hope that today (and all your days) are happy and safe.

I would not consider myself superstitious, but I always try to not walk under a ladder for other reasons.

On the good luck side, I have a fondness for four leaf clovers and a found pottery piece (buried outside) half full of pennies I've found heads up.

Today would have been my dad's 90th birthday. He's been gone 8yrs last month. Doesn't seem that long ago, but in some ways seems like forever.

Well, I didn't even realize today was Friday the 13th. I knew it was Friday and I knew today is Dec 13, but somehow my brain did not connect the 2 until I saw this post.

I'm not superstitious, but I do get a teeny tiny little bit uneasy when I think of Friday the 13th.

Oh I am good with it. ha ha ha I guess it is just meant to be for me to be HERE lol and not work work work. Even the mails to mai niece are not going through because her mailbox is full. When I first started out in daylilies only the full figured gals got my attention, but after seeing ones such as your wonderful picture of Hold your Horses I find my prejudice fading away a little each year.....I've never thought of humidity causing a daylily to melt. I still have problems with Citrix holding it's substance past noon (color holds fairly well until late afternoon). Maybe that's the reason. It hasn't been all that hot here lately, but it has been humid because of the frequent showers. Hummmm......Maryl

Here is asinfully rich recipe from the Alcoholian blog that kept us entertained this weekend. But how do you go from this: to this: in the middle of a total kitchen renovation? Here the "bugs" are shown from a wider vantage point: (You may recall I set up a kitchen in my basement laundry room with range and dishwasher.) After dispatching them as humanely as possible, and 2 minutes' boiling, the lobsters appear like this: , which is a closeup of this lovely tableau on top of the dryer: . The prep space resides on top of the DW: , allowing me to extract all of the lobster meat, which is only partially cooked at this point. Next, it is bagged up and vacuum sealed with LOTS of butter: . The bag of goodies is taken to the basement bathroom where the home-made sous vide machine resides: . The sous-vide cooking ensues, which essentially amounts to gentle poaching in butter. Next, we have partial plating on top of the now-cleared dryer: , followed by full plating at the table: . The sauce is rich, buttery, and creamy. This is topped by creme fraiche with herbs, and a dollop of caviar. This was fun, but I cannot WAIT to cook a meal in a proper kitchen again!

My dad was born on Friday the 13th in 1913. My only brother died on Friday the 13th this past September, on Dad's birthday. So I have mixed feelings!

Roxana. My dad was also born on the September 13 but I’m not sure if it was a Friday.

My story: while not a Friday on 3/13/13 My meningioma tumor was diagnosed.

Ten years later, DD was married on 3/13/23!

DD met her husband at a bar that has 13 in the address.

Jilly , sounds like the number 13 is propitious for you. Lucky the tumor was caught, not that it happened.

Its funny how I instinctively follow superstitions. I knock on wood, cross my fingers, won’t walk under a ladder ( which is sensible) , won’t put a hat on a bed, never put an umbrella over my head inside.

Friday the 13th doesnt concern me but if something bad happens, Ill blame it on the date.

I am kind of superstitious even though I cannot defend it, and would never admit it IRL.

I met one of my most serious BFs in college on a Friday the 13th. For years after that, he would get in touch on Friday the 13ths from time to time. IIRC he did so about 10 years ago now. Luckily by mail. (awk!)

@Kswl, i had fave words as a kid too. Mine was "cacopygian." It came from some dumb book I bought about exotic words.

Many years ago hubby and I bought a large rural acreage, a dream come true for our young (at the time) boys. As we were eagerly tramping around and exploring it the next day, Friday the 13th, we were surprised to see several vehicles drive past on the dead-end road bordering our new land. Then the sheriff, a fire truck, and eventually the county coroner.

Turns out the person we had purchased the land from, after we finalized the purchase the day before, had driven past it about a mile, pulled over to the side of the road and blasted his brains out. 😳😵‍💫

Disconcerting to be sure. However, hubby the pragmatist told me that we obviously paid too much money!!!!

I think of that day every Friday the 13th and hope that fellow is resting in peace.

My DH's mother was born on Friday the 13th.

My favorite F13 reference is the comic strip Pogo where they would say "it is Friday the 13th on a Tuesday".

@mtnrdredux_gw, from what we understood later, he was a troubled man with a rocky past. Apparently this piece of real estate was the last thing he had to ”settle up” before he died. His sister was his only relative. A sad story.
