Kitchen remodel/layout help

We are planning on moving into a new home in the new year and would like to renovate the kitchen to make it more bright, airy and open. The fixtures are twenty years old so in need of updating.

We would liken to add an island and remove the peninsula. We are also considering removing the walk in pantry and using that space to expand the kitchen’s footprint and build a bar into the dining area. However, we will need effective pantry cabinets since we have 3 children.

Open to cooktop with wall ovens but understand the space is tight. We are open to suggestions and ideas.

Here are a few pictures of the space along with the floorplan of the house. Just a note that the floorplan is for the flipped model.

I will be working with a designer but wanted to get some ideas beforehand. Thank you for your help!

Live with it as is for 6 months to a year. In that time frame you will figure out what works and what does not work for you. No sense spending money and then hating the new layout and having to throw away the dollars you just spent or being forced to live with something you hate.

I agree with millworkman - however let me be the first to say that you will need to post a floor plan with dimensions so that any advice given can be based in reality. Adding an island will come down to the inches you have to work with.

Only 12" on each side of the range???? That's barely enough room for emergency landing space, definitely not enough workspace! If the Prep Zone is b/w the sink & refrigerator...it's convenient to the refrigerator but very inconvenient to the Cooking Zone. It will also entail zone-crossing when going to/from Prep Zone & Cooking Zone...you cross the Cleanup Zone. If the Prep Zone is to the right of the sink, it's somewhat convenient to the range, inconvenient to the refrigerator, and will probably mean prepping over the DW...which can be a problem if more than one person works in the kitchen and/or you're not disciplined enough to be sure the DW is not loaded or unloaded or used for "storage" during prep & cooking (I know we certainly are not!) I also echo the issue about the DW... Refrigerator...it's OK to have an oven next to a refrigerator b/c insulation on both appliances is pretty good. However, I would not recommend a SxS or French Door model refrigerator b/c the only landing space for it I see is on the other side of the oven and that means it would only work for a refrigerator that has a handle on the oven side. You say only the location of the window is "almost set in stone". What about doorways? Can the window be moved up/down the wall? Could you post a pic of the entire first floor layout (or whatever floor the kitchen is on)? Have you had a chance to read the "Read Me" thread? I have designed Ikea kitchens forever and never used the planner . I do not understand how the new relates to the original. One is square the other a rectangle so please just post a to scale floor plan of the space do not add anything into the plan but all windows doorways where those lead and all measurements clearly marked . IMO you strat by making sure the range is vented to the outside and never in the island. Better yet get an actual independant KD who has worked with Ikea if that is the cabinet style and price you like, SQ footage is useless for this type of planning every measurement is need on every wall .

Even with that change, you won't have enough room for seating at the island if you want to keep the cabinets on the refrigerator wall too. Do you need the island seating with the kitchen table right next to it? The easiest way would be to put cabinets or shelves where the knee space is instead. If you really want the island seating, you'll need to reduce the cabinets on the wall there to 12" or so, which will give you a 53" aisle--still very tight (and less than is recommended) for seating, with a not terribly useful depth for the pantry cabinets. It seems like a big cost when the kitchen table is right there.

Thanks for all the feedback; it didn't feel right and I'm glad I wasn't wrong in thinking that. We rarely use our formal dining room (5-6 times a year) and wanted to enlarge the kitchen because it can be tight at times from a family of 5. Additionally, we thought if the kitchen was immediately adjacent to the living room we'd use it more too; currently we rarely ever use that room either. Our goal was to increase the functional living space. I took some pictures of the house currently before I left for work (sorry if lighting is off) and updated the plan with labels. Thank you again for the help. Walking into the house from the front door to show the opening in the stairwell that opens into current dining room. We are updating the stair railing also. If the current owners do not have it staged as such or you are not aware, the (formal) Dining Room is located within the Great Room aligned with the stair circulation.

After living here a while, you might feel some other changes to Dining, overly-large empty space in the Master, etc might need addressed during the Kitchen remodel.

I support the message to move in, live there for six to twelve months. When we moved to our current home, I had set, definite ideas. After living in it for just a short time, I took my ideas in a different direction. I walked around early morning with my coffee and a notebook. While I fixed lunch, I kept my notebook near. Dinner time brought up good and bad features that I had been certain would work, but wouldn’t. I had lots of time to watch the sunset through the windows and prove to myself my first choice for cabinet colors needed to be adjusted before we started work. Keep a list of pros and cons-loved the prep sink before I worked in the existing space until I saw the counter space was awkward.-no prep sink in the remodel! Reviewing my notes was reassuring-I had good reasons for discarding the larger island and using a slightly smaller one that helped our traffic flow. My husband lives to cook, so I constantly tweaked my plans to make the space better for him, too. There is no rush, keep the goal of a beautiful, functional kitchen for your family.
