New Report about dangers of Round UP
Comments (151)Henry, I read that study and the findings and it suggests that the manner of application if done improperly leads to problems due to the fact that the product penetrates the skin. Let us say for the sake of argument you do everything "correctly" and apply without skin penetration, what about the residues and product that do not break down or wash off the the veggie or the corn or soy? I understand from what I read that round up resistant GMO's were developed to allow farmers to use even more of the glyophosate so it follows that if it persists in the soil and environment and on the vegatative material in greater amounts. Okay, so now in the GMO situation they use even more of it...the studies I have read that come from different sources seems to suggest that glyophosate does not break down in soil as believed and if it is turning up in breast milk doesn't that mean we are digesting it? and that it is persistant in the environment? I am not singling out any of the particular ingredients but it may just be what is in the formulation. (I have a link from an Autism site regarding the persistance of pesticides and herbicides in humans, breast milk and umbilical cords etc... one of these studies listed my neighbor's mother in Seattle was involved with in San Francisco due to the prevalence of breast cancer in the area. - her mom died and they linked the levels of breast cancer to mercury from fish, and pesticides.) Wouldn't this support what the French research suggests? It is not just the application but the actual ingestion via skin penetration or the food? My friend whose child has autism says that there are so many controversies regarding this issue it is hard to single out one single cause except that it appears to be an environmental related issue and possibly a gene connection where some individuals are more sensitive to pesticides and how they penetrate cells. Unfortunately it is too late for her child. For the most part I have not seen most people use gloves to use pesticides, in the cases in Argentina it was "arial spraying, and "combinations" of deadly pesticides with the glyphosate where the birth defects and cancer were turning up. I poisoned myself in my 20's when I did not use gloves, and did not understand the significance of the label and the warnings. Most people are not educated about these labels, in fact I was told that "round up was perfectly safe" by the garden center that sold it to me. It is all so disturbing. I am going to interview the organic farmer I met and ask him about his process. He was very clear that he went organic because "it was the right thing to do, and teased his friend, the other farmer about not being a moral person...in jest...Farmers, especially small family farms live in a different world than the home, or urban gardener. If we the consumers are misled it is easy to see how farmers would be misled as well....See MoreRequesting Support for Women's College
Comments (7)Thank you Cyn and Marie-cate! Marie, it's a bit of a complicated question-- the financials reported and projections are at the core of what we are contesting. The college is in great debt. They built a state-of-the-art Leeds compliant science center in 2008 and that represents the bulk of the debt. However, the endowment more than covers that debt-- and while it did dip quite a bit in 2008-2009, it has regained it's value. I/we very much believe that going coed is an attempt by the new president and the consultant group (who used some of the very same tactics to take another women's college coed) she hired to improve the viability-- and possibly influenced by outside interests. They are doing horrible things to turn away alumnae, their financial support.. and even making it difficult for us to support the students on campus who have endured the stress and disappointment of their decision. The other primary issue we have is that they have failed to embrace the college for women or to market its strengths. In addition to the new science center, they have great programs in veterinary science and equine studies.. and they intend to expand into health sciences. We have an excellent record of sending on students to masters and PhD's-- especially in the sciences. They hang onto the figures that state that only 4% of hs juniors say they seek a single-sex college-- but that ignores the overwhelming majority of us who did NOT seek a single-sex education but selected the college for its other merits. Oh boy, the Best Western in winter! From what I am told, we wouldn't recognize Chambersburg now. Did you ever drive by the campus? It's beautiful .. but in a horrible state of disrepair. This is part of what we are raising funds for also. The administration and BoT have not done well by the college....See MoreAny young ladies feeling like you don't have a voice?
Comments (29)Chiming in to say 1) probably yes because you are female (not necessarily just because you are young) 2) we have a problem in our society in general of poor workmanship and lack of ethics as well Advice: 1) do a lot of research before getting your bids and signing a contract--this site has been very helpful to me, as well as asking neighbors, co-workers, checking with the BBB, doing a google search, etc. 2)Get a good digital camera and take pictures of the entire process-before during and after, and make sure that they know you are documenting. Also document your conversations. Half of these workmen won't blink an eye at lying about what happened, what was done etc. They convince themselves that they are justified in some way. 3) Make sure that you know multiple ways to contact the contractor--phone, email, etc, so you can get around the "I didn't get your message" excuse. 4) If you can have a male around at the time of signing the contract or even the estimate do so. They don't have to be related, just just need to appear like they know something and have an interest in the situation 5) when or if you do have to dispute something, remember that thanks to your documentation and contract, you control the situation and the paycheck (you haven't paid them until you are satisfied, right?) and don't have to put up with it. Continue to state with a friendly-to-neutral voice and demeanor what needs to be fixed and why, and DON'T let the contractor distract you with red herrings (like "I shouldn't have to fix this hole in the wall because you changed the paint color") and excuses ("Grandma was sick") Remember, you don't need them to LIKE you, and they don't care if you like them. About the cabinets: I hope you have some sort of warranty. I would be asking for a refund and opening a complaint with the BBB....See MoreBlast from the past - 2000 'Get to know each other' thread
