Question about my slab.
Comments (5)It would be best to excavate under the bayed portion of the slab and remove the siding each side of the bay,( brick, vinyl, wood siding, whatever you have), about a foot or so past the bay each side to allow a concrete saw to be able to cut the width of the bayed portion in line with the main slab. Remove enough siding each side to remove about a foot or so of the wall framing butting up to the bayed framing. This will allow you to get the saw past the bay and plane into the existing main slab. If possible, cut w/ the concrete saw as deep as the slab shows in regards to grade,(the part of the slab that you can see from the ground to the siding type), and then it can be jack hammered carefully away from there. This is of course after you have stripped all of the bayed framing down to the bayed slab. By excavating under, it will make the removal of the concrete easier when you jack hammer and sledge the slab down and away. When you refill the void left from digging, compact it back in place against the existing main slab, then reframe away the new opening. You can use wedge anchors to bolt down the new sill plate....See MoreQuestion about my slab.
Comments (1)To properly do what you propose, the straight wall section should have a foundation under it. With a slab, you may not be able to determine this unless you broke the slab up in the proposed area and looked underneath. You probably could get somebody to scab the wall in right on top of the existing slab, but this wouldn't be the proper way to do it. The other issue I see is that you may have trouble getting brick for the staright wall to match the existing brick. Why not replace the existing window with a modern low-e glazed unit, do a proper installation, and repair the existing brickwork?...See MoreWindows leak
Comments (1)I don't understand how the aluminum mesh is attached. Normally there is a screen that just clips in place, but it sounds like you did something different. Perhaps that is the cause. Another possibility is that the leaks are coming from between the sash and the frame. If the window was improperly installed the margins around the window might be uneven, allowing water and air infiltration. Check to see that all gaps around the sashes are the same, and that the weatherstrip is intact and in place to do its job. Another possibility is that the weep holes (if any) on the exterior side are blocked or plugged. If so unplug them. Many brands of vinyl windows are designed with weep holes on the exterior to allow water to weep out rather than building up and getting inside. The last possibility is that water is getting behind the installation fins. Water does get behind any type of siding and runs down. The fins should be (and often aren't) sealed to the sheathing with sealant or tape before the siding is applied. If not, under the right circumstances, water could run down the sheathing, behind the siding, and go behind the installation fin and drip into the house from the top of the window. The fix for that would be to seal the fins to the sheathing, but they would be covered up by siding or trim at this point....See MoreSkylight window leaks water
Comments (4)FT is right, 98% of the time the skylite itself does not leak. Flashing not properly installed (have seen the flashing used as a nailing flange too many times) is the normal culprit, or shingles not properly installed after the skylite is installed....See MoreRelated Professionals
