@Oakley….Your Inspiration Made Me Do It

Back around the first of the year, Oakley posted a photo of a project made from an old quilt. I decided to cooy this idea using an old quilt that was made by my great grandmother. It definitely had seen better days and was languishing in a box. Here is the end result.

I plan to give them to family members along with a copy of photos of my GgM and GgF, their dates of birth, death, etc during the holidays.

I also salvaged a few squares, enough for a couple of small pillows and if i get around to it before the holidays I’ll stitch those.

They are simply gorgeous, quaint, and just darling. Keepers!

You can make a wall hanging with the quilt too. I don't have a picture of the one I did, so here's one I found online to give you a general idea.

This one's a bit more intricate than mine, same pattern but I didn't do double stitching around each block or quilt around each heart. It's real easy.

Oh Oakley, that quilt is so cute! That would be right in DD’s wheelhouse. I’ll show it to her and maybe we can figure out something. I have at least one other quilt I might be able to do something with.

I gave one to my niece for her son’s big boy bedroom. It was in pretty good shape and only needed a couple of repairs. She wanted something vintage and all the quilts her DH inherited were too feminine.

Mine are doing great the 3 gal one has been putting out new blossoms like crazy the 1 gal still has none but I am hoping it will look at the 3 gal and feel bad so it will start :) As the little lemons are getting biger I can really see the stripes. Mongolian BBQ In a wok, fork fry the sausage to break it up well as it fries. Add one chopped onion and one minced garlic clove or season with garlic salt. Drain off any excess grease. Add a 3 drops of chili oil, available in the Chinese food ingredients aisle of your grocery store. Now per person add to the wok one shredded carrot and a stalk of celery thinly sliced. Also add shredded cabbage, some sliced green or colored peppers, some snipped cilantro, and a little good soy sauce and cover the veggies with a large lid like from a frying pan if possible to steam the veggies in their own juices for a few minutes. Sometimes I add sliced mushrooms. Now add a handful of bean sprouts per person. When the bean sprouts are done to your preference, but still have some crispiness to them, your Mongolian BBQ is done. Serve a large spoonful inside some pita bread for a delicious but messy to eat meal. It can be served over rice, but the pita bread is better. This is a very forgiving recipe if you want to use more or less of anything or even substitute.

Eld: first of all, thank you so much for your thoughtful suggestions! You are really educating me here. It never occurred to me that anything other than white would be the solution to a dingy looking area. But what you said makes perfect sense. Funnily enough, I was actually going to use Light Navajo White, because that is what I just used in my kitchen. Because my house is so small, I really want to use the same colors and materials throughout everything except two bedrooms and the bathrooms. So same flooring, paint colors, etc. in the library, LR, eat-in kitchen, and hallway. I thought it would help the visual flow of the space and unify it, while at the same time making it look and feel bigger. The light navajo white says it has a hint of brown. It is definitely not a super white white. Do you think it would work in the hallway? Also, Eld, yes, the door on the right in the picture is the back door of the house. It's actually located about in the middle of the length of the house. The hallway, if you measure starting at the Sterilite drawers on the left, is just over 16' long. There are three other doors off it besides the back door. The main bathroom is just before the laundry on the left, my room is on the left just after the laundry, and Joy's room is at the very end. I completely agree that better lighting would make a huge difference! Murraysmom, thanks for sharing! I love water colors! Your little hallway sounds peaceful, with the softness of a light green and the painting. I don't know if you've seen any of cpartist's colored pencil art--she posts on the kitchen forum and sometimes here as well, but her drawings are so gorgeous! She is to drawing what Shades is to glass mosaics. My dream wall would have a large cpartist work of flowers in a vase hanging up and Shades' glass lizard climbing up the wall! Eld, hahaha! Every time I write your name, my stupid phone changes it to either "Elf" or "Elderly!" If I missed any when I proofread, my apologies in advance, lol!! :-) Chris, if that mural is to cover up a "design mistake," then I say Praise the Lord for design mistakes! My comments are glowing because I truly love your art!! And I'm so glad you have this "therapy" to work on while you're caring for Joe in the sunset of his life. So true, Oly. Most of the time we don't even know who stitched the old quilts we bought here and there. Which reminds me, I'm ready to give my sons a quilt, one from my late mother and one from my late MIL.

Very true, Oly. While I usually don’t go for much craft activity, this seemed like a good way to do ’something’ to preserve a bit of family history and share it among the family. I ended up with several quilts after my mother died. A couple were in good shape, but as we know, they were well-used back in the days when they were made.

Thanks for all your kind & sweet comments. They really were not too hard to make. A few suggestions in case anyone wants to tackle a similar project.

1. I found a heart template easily online. My choice of size was based on the quilt I was using and how I was cutting the hearts to make the most of the pattern of the quilt itself. YMMV, but I’m happy to share dimensions if anyone needs it. if you have a good printer you can enlarge or reduce most anything slightly

2. Use good, sharp pinking shears to cut the quilt. The old cotton batting is harder to cut than I expected. Mine had batting that shifted due to washing over the years and was not even by any means.

3. I used embroidery floss and a heavy duty needle to stitch together. Again, the 2 layers of quilt plus batting was difficult to sew through in places.

4. I think the sample photo shows a heart with stuffing. I chose not to do this, but a puffier heart would be cute.

5. Any buttons can be used (or not). I sewed those on prior to sewing the 2 heart halves together. Then attach the ribbon.
